And a BA takes the same amount of time as a BS. BA is Bachelor of Arts, and BS is Bachelor of Science. It isn't literal though, you can get a Bachelor of Arts in a scientific field, it just means that you don't do quite as much math.

Once you have a Ph.D., you gain the right to be called "Doctor," though it is different from being a medical doctor. Thus, you can be a "Doctor" of physics.

An M.D. is a medical doctor. They have to go to medical school, which can take many years to get all the way through. They're also obviously called doctors.

Trust me when I say your high-school marks don't really mean shit, everyone in my programme -with very few exceptions- was top of their class in high-school and their grades at uni are completely different from high-school (including people who getter higher grades now, but slacked during high-school).

Also, chemistry is actually a very small part of ChemE, thermodynamics is probably the most important aspect of the field, but you'll also get a solid background in classical Physics and Mechanics, Phys-, o-chem&material science, Electrical Engineering (especially power generation), biotechnology and the usual calculus (almost everything you do will require calculus) (up to PDE's) and statistics.

>Took a year off after school and was thinking about either it or mining engineering.
I always recommend doing the traditional engineering disciplines (ChemE, EE, MechE and CivilE) over specialized disciplines unless you are 100% sure you want to go into miningE. The reason for this is that you can, for example, easily enter the mining industry with a ChemE degree, but you can't do much else beside mineE with mineE. Do some research, make sure it's what you really want.

Also taking a year off after high-school will have a very negative impact on you (a lot more than you would think), I suggest you check out the sticky and start preparing for your first year courses (especially calculus).

If you have any more question I might answer them later (on archive.installgentoo.net/sci/thread/4942797)

>How much of ChemE is actually math?
ChemE is one big problem solving course using calculus with a few scientific principles.

>And what does a ChemE actually do on the job?
The field is extremely diverse, I can't give a general answer here.

>sheer amount of men
You shouldn't be trying to date woman in your class anyway...
The "math" isn't that difficult (you use it a lot, but it's not difficult), if you can do everything up to PDE's with ease you shouldn't have much trouble.

>I find every aspect of biology easy to comprehend, I'm good at basically any chemistry that isn't organic (Hate the everloving shit out of organic chem). Would you recommend it to someone like me?

> Would you recommend it to someone like me?
That depends on what industry you would want to work in, if you want to work with biotech for example you can easily get a job with a graduates in biochem and some reaction/kinetics engineering electives.

Overall I would not recommend it to you, but
>Science/Engineering dual or a Business/Science dual next year.
Engineering would infinitely more valuable for your career, a business degree is basically worthless (even in the business side of the company a engineer is more useful) and everyone in the industry knows it, but there's no need to get an engineering degree (it will help a lot, but make your undergrad hell) if you want to be doing R&D for example.

Biotech is my passion, but it's not even emerging in Australia yet, I'd probably have to go to MIT/UCB. The Biotech/Chem Eng dual at my university seems useless, it's just a limited BSc/BE with a cool title.

Understanding the math and the science behind engineering problems is the easy part, producing a creative solution to the problem as a whole is what makes engineering difficult. Seriously most exam problems I've had up until now (3 semsester in) in core classes (ie engineering modules, not science/calc ) have been open book exams with 100's of data pages and problems that could be solved with simple algebra and knowing that mass/energy IN=mass/energy OUT, you can take any cheat sheets/wikipedia articles you want into the exam...they don't help much...

>I have a girlfriend, I just prefer working with women. More sociable, generally harder workers, and I'm not competition for them. Most of my friends of females (Male minority in my major).
No offense to the exceptions, but I've always found the females in my course to be completely incompetent in everything except memorization. I always have to hold their fucking hand in the labs whenever critical thinking is required.

>Ideally I'd like to work as a manager in genetics/biomedical engineering.

I'm doing my BS in MechEg.
i'm not sure yet if i will enroll into a master course.
but Economics seems like a good course to master in, just because i want to own my business and i want to have a good knowledge of that area.

So it's more about the way I think than understanding mathematical concepts? Am I on the right track if I assume a difficult engineering problem is like a riddle?

That's probably the case in engineering now I think about it, granted I am in biology so it is largely memorization/conceptual stuff.
Righto, I'll take another look at the BE/BSc then, you don't really need to be trained to manage people I suppose. I just wanted to have the option to go on and get an MBA.
