The landing was nice this morning, I loved it, but I don't get why they admitted having received help from other countries, and then proceeded with the "only America could have done it" speech. yeah it's cool that America took the initiative, but how is claiming all credit going to encourage other countries to partner up with them again?

>> No.4940636

Every country that contributed has had their own press conference about how special they are because only they could have designed their part. Nationalistic dick waving is a big reason politicians can continue giving money to space programs. Nobody but children are buthurt about americans patting themselves on the back, its how the world works.

What annoys me the most is they have to associate an achievement with a state.

Can't we just call it an achievement of mankind? That's all it is. We are the product of billions of years of evolution, and we're separating ourselves in a mere speck of our time on earth.

I'm sure not all of those engineers and scientists were born in the United States, not that it matters.

this. what the fuck america.

no other country would claim ownership of such an amazing achievement. we are beginning to study how to inhabit other planets. fuck america, all you did was put the money there.

>> No.4940662

The reason for the patriotism is to try and get the American public behind them, the American public that will vote and hopefully increase their funding.

If you read between the lines there was a lot said to try and justify why America should spend more on local engineering, science and education. It had to be done.

>> No.4940669

>>4940656 all you did was put the money there
And that is the achievement. Because currently, no other country has the intelligence and perspective to do that in that extent.

In ten years China might have turned the tables though, with the USA being the ones who ask to join in.

>> No.4940668

NASA doesn't want innovation, they want safety. Missions with relatively easy goals. They want a "cheap" rover to drill what, 1m into the surface to analyze hydrocarbons to look for sign of life? Why not a real drill to look for hydrocarbons deeper in the surface to find a source of fuel for return trips in the future? They let a fear of investment into a possible failure prevent them from making any groundbreaking discoveries. No wonder foreign governments and private American and British corporations are expected to be at the forefront of space exploration and development.

>> No.4940675

>>4940647

Did a state not fund the project, using taxpayer money, and was the project not ran by a state organization?

FFS, every space-fairing nation claims their achievements. Hell, we're better than most, when we went to the moon, our Astronaut said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

Not "hurr america".

Get off it, it's okay to show a little national pride. Until the world starts actually giving money to the USA or whomever to "work for humanity", I think the current system is workable.

I doubt it.
The US's monopoly on this stuff won't be broken because, when you take a look at the teams that design and innovate for NASA, they're typically a very diverse bunch.
The point is, no matter what geniuses other countries raise, the US is able to steal them away because the US has a monopoly on the best private universities in the world. It's not that the government of China can't invest in their own universities to modernize them, but it can't gain the centuries of recognition that the big names in the US have, nor can it attract as many world-renowned / top-of-the-field professors.
The US has an unmatched system of attracting and holding on to top talent, developed gradually over a century.

Why is America in a clapping fit? You landed an RC car on Mars, Europe revolutionised science with the discovery of the Higgs Boson a few weeks ago by the use of a significantly more expensive and impressive machine and you don't see us being clap happy and get in a massive circle clap over it, you didn't put a man there so why are you all sucking each other off? I guess Americans really are just immature and love the smell of their own smug.

Unless this was planned by NASA because if they hype it up enough the Americans will clap harder than they ever have before and all of that combined clapping faster than the speed of light will tear open a portal in space making human travel to Mars possible.

This was NASA's PR project designed as a vehicle (lol, pun intended) for a number of objectives:
1. keep the fanbase entertained, loyal and fed with pics and whatnot
2. show the administration and the fanbase that NASA is still up and doing something (if they don't score enough PR points in the media, ppl might start thinking 'wait a minute, maybe Obama was right in slashing their funds')
3. attract enough media attention so that maybe this enthousiasm would put pressure on the political administration to give more funding
4. say that other countries contributed to this project so that *hint hint* someone from the administration would get it that "the American dream" is being sponsored from outside, which wouldn't go well with voters, would it..
5. ???
6. Lather, rinse, repeat (until u get more funding).

What to learn from this: Never help any American. They will only claim your part to be theirs and only theirs.
Seriously, the speech of the NASA's administrator was a joke. It basically went like: "Yeah, a lot of people from a lot of countries around the world worked on this, but USA USA USA USA SUCK OUR DICK CHINA USA USA USA USA."

I remember when China had that recent success with two space vehicles meeting each other. The news here in Germany were saying this was a major propaganda success for China ("propaganda" is a very negative term in German, puts you on one level with the Nazi), but in this case they are all positive to no end, while the US is playing the propaganda card worse than China ever did.
