If the Universe is expanding then what is it expanding into?

>> No.4929168

It's not expanding, everything is just shrinking.

>> No.4929166

itself

>> No.4929172

what do you mean "into"? space is expanding, it cant expand "into" anything. your question doesn't make sense.

>> No.4929180

It isn't expanding, the distance between points is increasing.

>> No.4929211

semantics...

you meant what i knew damn it

>> No.4929214

If we have more knowledge about the stages of universe, we can make an semi accurate description of what our universe might expand into. And describe what stage the universe it at.

>> No.4929218

This might sound silly, but our universe is moving in a way similar to cell division.
I think our universe is splitting in two.

>> No.4929222

>>4929218
Theres no reason to suggest micro-biology rules apply to cosmic level objects. Each stages of system have their own rules.

>> No.4929228

>>4929222
Theres no reason to suggest otherwise.

When discussing the universe as a whole, any theory is plausible.

...That's expansion.

Except thats not true. I could say that the universe is riding on the back of a giant turtle, but that's not plausible

The problem is that you're thinking of a three-dimensional space which ours is embedded in. This isn't the case. Granted I don't know what the case, per se, actually is. But the universe is most certainly not simply a subset of an unbound, empty set.

>> No.4929522

>If the universe is expanding
>If

Not enough information required to form an answer that's not a rash hypothesis.

>> No.4929541

>>4929168
If that were true distances would all increase by the same amount. Observation shows them tied to distance which says metric expansion.

>>4929218
It really isn't. Justify your statement.

>> No.4929549

The Universe isn't expanding into anything, it's just expanding.

Everything used to be a lot closer to Everything Else
Now Everything is getting farther from Everything Else as space expands.

>> No.4929554

Hey g-guys, you know the edge of space right? Wh-whats on the other side of it?

>> No.4929582

It's just expanding.

But, we could exist on a 3-brane then I don't have a clue what's going on.

>> No.4929592

>>4929164
you ask this as if you know how "normal" volume works. It is really baffling to think the most fundamental things. The only thing we can measure in the universe is displacement and it only works through reference frames.

I don't understand your question. You are assuming that universe is (spatially) inside something, and that if something expands then it must be inside something. Both seem suspect and without an evidence basis. If true, then no one knows, assuming the question is even coherent.

>edge of space
What edge of space? Do you mean the edge of our visible universe? Presumably more universe like the same.

>> No.4930025

it's like a balloon.
