is the number '1'
both odd and even?

>> No.4922812 [DELETED]

no, it's only odd

even numbers give an integer when divided by 2

1 divided by 2 is not an integer

>> No.4922815

When you start counting at 2, then 2 becomes 1 and 1 becomes 0. Zero is even and odd. The answer is yes, but it depends on your frame of reference.

>> No.4922828

>>4922815

You can't "start counting at 2."

Zero is not odd. You are some idiot.
An even number is an integral multiple of 2.
An odd number is an integral multiple of 2 add 1.

Zero can be divided by 2 and by 1, so it's even and odd.

All numbers can be divided by 1.

2 can be divided by both 2 and by 1, so it's both even an odd.

Did you even read what I said?
You must be either retarded or in grade school.

Any odd times and odd is odd.

Zero times an odd is zero, i.e. it's odd. As we already know its even, we conclude that it's both even and odd (it has "dual parity").

As you get farther in you're mathematical career, you'll discover many oddities like that. It's fine to not know them now, but if you get too cocky too early you'll miss out on the chance to learn a lot.

By that logic *all* even numbers are also odd.

2 times an odd is even, therefore 2 is odd

You are using the converse of a statement on grounds that the original statement is true.
i.e. you are retarded.

The gall you have, I bet you have not read even one book on number theory.

You're begging the question; assuming what you want to prove is true.
The fact that zero multiplied by an odd number is zero *doesn't* imply that zero is odd - an odd number multiplied by an even number is even, so the fact that an odd number multiplied by zero equals zero could also be a result of zero being even. The oddness of zero is out-ruled by the fact that there is no even number k for which k-1 = 0
Have you studied any ring theory? You need to brush up on this stuff before you're faced with ideals.

I was going to continue but it felt like beating a dead horse.

So this is how we troll now? By claiming zero is even and odd? Jesus christ. Why can't we just get back to the Putnam threads? At least then we had some direction.

I was hoping that a one-off joke would be okay, but you're right I guess I slipped up. Ah well, we'll see what happens.
