I'm a layman so I'm probably getting this wrong somehow but as I understand it:

There would be no perspective where anyone could stand and measure you going the speed of light. Someone outside the ship would find the ship shortened and time slowed down so that you could never quite reach that speed. You on the ship will find the outside distorted so that you couldn't find anything that you could measure yourself going the speed of light against. Time and space will always appear to warp in a way so that you'll never have anything with mass quite reach 100% of c.

That's because he's an engineering student. Engineers love standard results and shallow understandings, they have more important (to them) things to be spending their time studying than going in depth into the Physics.

His QM professors are probably as sick as the rest of us of Engineers going round proclaiming they know as much about science/maths as the scientists/mathematicians and that they're the only useful STEM subject. lets say we launch a mothership going 99.999... speed of light relative to earth. This mothership can now be declared as going 0 relative to itself, with earth moving away from the ship at 99.999... speed of light (relative to the ship). The mothership can then launch a spaceprobe at 99.999... speed of light... in the opposite direction of the earth.

At first glance would appear to break some laws of reality, since relative to earth the spaceprobe would appear to be moving twice the speed of light. This is where things get fun, thanks to a little thing called ~*time dilation*~:

-for someone on the mothership, earth and the spaceprobe both appear to be moving at 99.999... speed of light.
-for someone on earth, the mothership and the spaceprobe would both appear to be traveling at an equal 99.999... speed of light. While the spaceprobe would technically be traveling slightly faster than the mothership relative to earth, the speed difference would be so minute as to be indistinguishable.

This strange experience can occur because speed of movement is met by a change in the speed of the passage of time.Hooray for the theory of relativity!
