Ok /sci/, I've decided I think I want to become a teacher. My major career goal is to one day become a research scientist (field still unknown, it all fascinates me). But until then, I figured it may be a good idea to become an average school teacher. I can live below my means, and I have developed a magic barrier to the lures of bitches and their money sucking tentacles, so I figure this may be a decent start for me. I would prefer to teach younger children because I am great with kids, and I love them because they are really the only innocent humans there are. I figured I could maybe do this for a few years, then get back into school to pursue becoming a research scientist around age 27 or 28 (or maybe seek a masters in education and go for principal or something one day if that is how I feel when I get to that bridge). This all kind of contradicts itself because if I want to teach young children, I would be learning a different skill set than that of a research scientist, and I wonder if there's a more efficient path I can take.

My main concern is that I don't want to teach kids who are 6th grade and above. I cannot handle insane, illogical, violent kids.

I don't know, my thoughts are a bit in disarray right now, and I wondered if anyone here had any advice to offer me.

There's a big different between dealing with people and dealing with kids post-puberty in public school. I mean, you'd have to be shitfuck retarded not to realize this. I am a server at Cracker Barrel and I deal with people all the time. It's not difficult at all. I also used to be a karate instructor and taught young children all the time. They loved me. When I say children are innocent, I am not saying that they do nothing wrong. I am speaking in a philosophical sense that they just don't fully understand the world and when they do something wrong, they aren't entirely to blame for it. It's just a personal view I have that lets me gravitate towards young people.

My woman comment was a half joke. Women and men are both equally evil, but seeing as I'm straight, I only deal with women in that regard, and I've had nothing but bad experiences with them. That doesn't mean I will never have a relationship again. It just means I will be paying extra close attention to any red flags I ever see when seeing a girl from here on out.

Regardless of what level you end up teaching, you're going to need to get certified.

Look into what kind of programs your university offers (I'm assuming you're in or starting college). Many universities offer MAT programs (Masters of Art in Teaching) and some even offer five year plans that will let you complete requirements for the MAT while you're an undergrad.

Alternatively, many states offer their own certification programs for graduates with bachelors degrees that can be completed in 12-16 months and will allow you to start teaching with a provisional license (you'll usually start work as a substitute or teacher assistant and work your way up to a standard license in a couple years).

Another option might be to look at service programs like Teach for America (though I'm afraid I don't know much about their program, you'll want to look it up on your own).
