Fuck this board. Seriously. I'm not going to try and say that it used to be great, because I've only been on here for two years. What I can say is that it's full of morons.

Okay, sometimes we talk about science. But we don't get anything done. Few people on here really know any substantial chemistry, physics, etc. to really have a fruitful discussion. Instead, it just turns into a bunch of confused undergrads asking for help on their homework.

Oh and by the way, when someone starts a thread asking how to solve "3/2x + 3 = 5x - 4," why do you faggots even bother replying? If I were a mod I would lock that thread and ban the faggot who started it. I would probably keep it at the top of the list of threads to let people know never post this horse shit ever again.

Same thing with does "does 0.999... = 1?!!!?!?!!?!" threads. I'm fucking sick of them. Yes they are the same number you cockgobbling faggot, why have you not been banned yet?

Oh yeah, and this is the "science and math" board. Where's the fucking math? Why aren't we discussing the developments of 20th century commutative algebra? why aren't we talking about the latest in complex analysis? where's the fucking group theory? ultraproducts? krull dimension? not fucking here. instead we've got people asking for help on their calculus homework, copy-pasting official solutions to putnam problems every single fucking time someone posts one, and making stupid fucking threads about 0.999...

Meta threads are much better.

meta meta posts are meh though

also, what does OP think of 0.11111... = 1 threads in binary?

Meta threads complaining about /sci/ are terrible. In a similar fashion, the worst part of summer is people complaining about summer.

So fuck off. If you want to improve the board, report and move on. Also, to improve the board, why don't YOU make threads about those topics?

>> No.4866254

.999... is an ambiguous number and does not equal 1. it is a process, and you never get to end of it so it is never equal to 1. same reason 0 * ∞ is undefined.

OP here. I do. I'm writing a senior thesis on ultrafilters in commutative algebra. Twice I've started a thread and even went through the effort to go through all of the details and build the subject up from scratch so that anybody with a basic knowledge of math could understand it.

I get all of like four or five replies which usually are along the lines of "well I don't see where you're going with this" or "this is too advanced for me" or "this is boring." people stop replying. my thread dies and my fingers hurt from typing so much for nothing, and it's all because people would rather reply to homework threads or discussions about the future of cryogenics.

Its a much better place
This is just pure comedy.

Thank you for your efforts though, you're a great person.

I don't know, I don't really have a schedule. I guess I've started my threads any time from 3 to 6 p.m., then I'll periodically check on them throughout the evening.

Pretty much this, just don't dare touch the quantum physics board. You are better off with stackexchange for anything actually theoretical.

The edgy board members over there will make every opportunity plausible to try and push you into their Bohmian philosophical pilot wave bullshit.

>> No.4866306

Why exactly are you not on SE.Math?
I post algebra related topics from time to time, it is usually interesting exercises from books, or questions about concepts I do not understand. I've never gotten a serious answer from anyone not posting Emma Stone pictures.

I love that 'Emma-lovin' guy. I've had some awesome discussions with him about advanced rQFT.

Anyways, there's a few of us here who know what we're talking about OP. Just gotta take the good with the bad, I suppose.

I dunno, I only agree in part with OP's post. I've been here for over 3 years and I have to say last year was really bad, but things seem to have cleared up. I know there was a bit of a exodus to Reddit, perhaps half of the trolls went there too.
