How does water (or any other electrolyte, I guess) hurt electronics?

>> No.4865158

lel

and it causes short circuits because water conducts electricity.

>> No.4865157

It's not water, it's the impurities in the water that cause conductivity

>water conducts electricity

No it doesn't, water is an insulator

>> No.4865171

What is commonly referred to as water does conduct electricity. Distilled water doesn't (or does only slightly because H+ OH- ions still exist in pure water).

>> No.4865178

>>4865166
Pure water doesn't. Most water does. Now to the question at hand.

OP, water damages electronics by creating pathways for the electricity within it that the circuit usually wouldn't have. Some components are only safe for very small voltage differences, and so often by random chance a few of those get fried. And that's how water damages electronics.

Water doesn't really "break" electronics... It may cause some things to short circuit, but usually you can just let your shit dry and it'll work again.

pure water does, slightly

Are you retarded?

>almost 2MV for a 1cm gap

That's about a million times less than salt water.

You can use pure water as a coolant for transformers, I've seen it done.

>brilliant EK misses the part where we explain how it HURTS ELECTRONICS

>grounding from traces / points that were not intended to be grounded
>this allows the current to bypass safeties such as resistors
>without the ability to control voltage/amperes often a weaker component will become damaged when it is forced to allow large amounts of power to ground through it

>this is why you can drop your cell in water
>have the battery short to case through random pcb /metal
>after rice removes this bridge of liquid through evaporation if the grounding was not through sensitive electronics your phone will work again.

>the worst thing you can have happen is a micro looses a pin (ie pull up not in place when volted in) this will likely fry your IC and cause the phone to remain unresponsive as now boot function may be affected
>please continue to bitch about water being conductive under x conditions while OP never asked for dis
