why not have plasma shielding and heavy plate shielding? it's always good to have a backup

the only reason why you would want to have plasma shielding only is if you are stupid enough to not have shipyards in space and keep them down on Earth, where you pay the price of gravity

if we can recreate a more energetic version of the van allen belt then we have our plasma shield
