I stumbled upon this /sci/,(H2O2 rocket propulsion) what do you think of it? It looks like its practical and possible, on a large enough scale. I dropped a few bucks on kickstarter. What are your thoughts?

word on the street is that nasa looked at it, did some tests, ran some numbers for production efficiency, went "meh, maybe later" and stopped.

also, hydrazine is better, higher specific impulse for less fuel mass and volume

>> No.4826834

nuclear pulse propulsion or might as well just fucking stay home.

Also how does this even work? Is this one of those scams where their "catalyst" is actually a key part of the reaction, just like all those "hydrogen powered cars!!" are?

>> No.4826835

>>4826809
i like listening to you guys talk about this shit. fascinating. just exquisite

>> No.4826846

When you read it, was the phrase "nuclear propulsion" even stated, no..... its H2O2 ( pressurized) racting with catalyst to make O2...

>> No.4826855

Been done.

From wikipedia:
Monopropellants such as hydrogen peroxide, hydrazine, and nitrous oxide are primarily used for attitude control and spacecraft station-keeping where their long-term storability, simplicity of use, and ability to provide the tiny impulses needed, outweighs their lower specific impulse as compared to bipropellants. Hydrogen peroxide is also used to drive the turbopumps on the first stage of the Soyuz launch vehicle.

>> No.4826857

Catalyst is a metal, not part of fuel because the element that it is made of is useless in propulsion. ima give them some money on kickstarter it sound good

Apparently hydrogen peroxide can give a max Isp of 161.

You are gonna have to make giant fucking rockets to lift anything to orbit with that low a specific impulse.

>> No.4826949

not novel, just a basic amateur rocketry project. it's good that they're doing it as kids, but let's not get carried away with this. it's just a high school project and won't lead anywhere, everything they're doing is conventional rocketry.

meh. It has been done. England's only orbital rocket, Black Arrow, used it. More recently, Armadillo Aerospace investigated all sorts of fuels starting with peroxide. It is attractive because it is storable and only needs a catalyst to dissociate, simplifying a lot of the plumbing. You could check their blog for reasons why they moved away from it to LOX/ethanol. Some of the reason is availability: it is hard to get large amounts of high purity peroxide.

Well, it might help the kids involved in it to have a few more dollars than they had before they started the project.
That's what kickstarter is all about.

>> No.4827927

>>4827904

No it's not.

Kickstarter Project Guidelines -
>. Funding for projects only. A project has a clear goal, like making an album, a book, or a work of art. A project will eventually be completed, and something will be produced by it. A project is not open-ended. Starting a business, for example, does not qualify as a project.

i.e. They have to do what they set out to do with clear goals and end points.

Giving kids a random lump of money to spend on essentially nothing is not clearly defined.

Not a chance. They just want money to dick around during the summer.

>> No.4827937

>>4827927
>They have to do what they set out to do with clear goals and end points.
No, a project can fail and then the money is lost for the investors.
Just because you set out with clear goals doesn't mean the project have to succeed.
All you need to get started on kickstarter is a good presentation. Then people choose whether or not they want to give you money. But once they've choosen to give it to you, it doesn't matter how you use it, they won't get it back.

>> No.4827949

On the topic of Kickstarter, I don't know how it works but I'm guessing you send money to Kickstarter who hold onto it until the deadline at which point it either gets returned to the backer or forwarded to the project leaders.

Who is the trusted man in the middle to hold the cash?

How much money/interest are they earning by letting these sums sit in their account for a month or two at a time?

Interesting idea for making some money but I can't help but think it's wrong.

>you send money to Kickstarter who hold onto it until the deadline at which point it either gets returned to the backer or forwarded
No. Some projects can last for years. And how are they supposed to start working without their funding?
The money you send is not a reward, it's the funding for the project.

this is how jet pack works

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_pack#Hydrogen_peroxide-powered_rocket_packs

"e great disadvantage is the limited operating time. The jet of steam and oxygen can provide significant thrust from fairly lightweight rockets, but the jet has a relatively low exhaust velocity and hence a poor specific impulse. Currently, such rocket belts can only fly for about 30 seconds "

They obviously have a design, a plan, and skills to put it together. Why would you doubt that they could complete a relatively simple project/ experiment because of age? If they weren't mature enough they wouldnt be doing it anyway.

As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.
