Why does /sci/ look down on biology?

>> No.4822637

I'd rather eat bunnies than study them.

>> No.4822645

i guess to protect their egos. If people are out enjoying the wonders of nature while doing important science it makes all that time spent in math/physics textbooks seem grueling in comparison. The truth is we all have an important role to play.

Because Biology is about the study of Life, who wants to hear about what you already go through everyday...?

>> No.4822647

/sci/ is a bunch of HS / CC students who look down on certain people to make themselves feel better.

this. if you aren't a math/physics/engineering autist, you're obviously an unintelligent barbarian! seriously, don't take this board seriously.

I don't know but that's a cute fucking bunny.

I looked in a book of biology and could not find an equation in every page, therefore there is less to learn and easier.

Because you're cute when you're trolled.

>> No.4823875

It's because biology is hard.

Also, the truths you learn from biology are harder for people to deal with then the safe theoretical world of physics and math. (I like math and physics)

only manchild and hipster do

>> No.4823910

It is a troll. Nobody looks down on biology. It is a very respectable hard science.

>> No.4823920

"Hard science" doesn't mean "science that is hard because math". It means science that follows the scientific method.

Psychology is generally not considered a hard science, because it uses way too much induction and concepts which can't be tested.

Biology, on the other hand, tests concepts using the current standards of scientific logic.

In undergrad people belittle it because it doesn't require much math to get the degree. Once you get to grad school or get into doing bio science, you realize that you need math. All papers in any field require analysis and you can't get by without a strong understanding of math, particularly stats. In the end, not counting theoretical physics, all grad students are in in the same boat in terms of how the scientific process works. So, it comes down to what do you find interesting.

Are you talking about macrobiology or microbiology? I think microbiology is more respected than macrobiology.

>> No.4824257

>>4824167
It's not just math. Microbiology is like a voodoo, and nothing seems to make sense, even to the microbiologists. It takes a very good mind to interpret results. I'm doing both micro- and nanofabrication in a cleanroom, and microbiology as well. Microbiology is by far the most frustrating and confusing of the two. With fab, I can read papers to find answers to problems without too much effort, or alter my parameters in a logical way with basic knowledge of chemistry and materials science. In microbiology I can't find an answer online to something as simple as "why did my fucking bottles just turn black"? Answers are not in the literature, and the "why" can easily be a PhD in itself for some seemingly simple problems.

>>4824257
My undergrad degree was in micro, I always found it logical and intuitive. You are working with living, evolving organisms, though, and while the minimum genome work is cool and the central dogma is great, it's true that we don't understand all the mechanisms and chemistry being performed even in simple organisms.

I don't know what problems you run into, but I'm imagining someone designing a factory run by trained monkeys. You can get the mechanics down pat, but sometimes the monkeys stop doing what you tell them, and start flinging shit around.

High school taught me to hate it. Not necessarily biology students but the subject itself. It's all just memorization. Pointless, stupid memorization of stuff that isn't even remotely interesting (gametophyte, sporophyte, this plant sexes this way and this plant this way..)
