a guy i knew became an architect,,,,,,, he said that in school they make you learn to do all the mathematical shit by hand--but at the same time, they tell you that once you get hired, you won't ever do it by hand again.

the reason is that when working you cannot do anything "by hand", you must provide a reference that proves that every decision you made was in accordance with normal building engineering standards. how much a roof beam can hold over how long a span, how thick wall joists must be, ect. and the CAD software is set up to automatically will pick a lot of that for you as you go, according to some standard reference

i'm a mechE and we use numerical integration all the time. if you're a student and wondering if you'll be doing calc by hand or solving ODE's by hand, yeah that doesnt happen in industry. we have mathematica, mathcad, matlab.

most machines designed today that require an actual engineer's input (versus a layperson's) are nontrivial. the idealized, simplified models in undergrad break down and you need to analyze them computationally. that of course relies on calc, PDE's etc. and one must understand them conceptually to not misuse the data, but you'll never have anything approaching a diff eq assignment. again that's easy shit and software can solve it faster and better than humans.
