I don't know about you guys, but hard science is tangibility. Let's look at psychology, it looks at mental functions through individual behavior, it's all in the head/mind, something you can't see, hear, or touch, so it's not tangible, therefore limiting it as a "soft science." Neurology, however, looks directly at brain waves and functions in that brain, that's tangible, thus making it a hard science. Or like chemistry, it's tangible because you can directly observe something like chemical bonds or reactions, that's tangible, thus making it a hard science.

there is no such thing as biology being a hard science. tell me one time where someone has claimed biology represents infatuating science. a biologist? look on... it's hearsay. there are only 2 actual hard sciences: chemistry and physics. i'm sure it can also be rationalized that chemistry and physics are also inevitably linked to one another (through thomas young's theories, i presume) and form one single "science", if you still need to call it that. i strongly believe that at least the 3 primary sciences are just a formal representation created by the biologists to conspire against the chemists in order to gain funding from the governments of the world.

The reason that we say everything is 3 hard sciences is because that is how we've been taught, but if someone started teaching kids that only chemistry and physics were hard, they would believe, so if we started to believe that psychoanalysis was a hard science, why can't it be? This is nothing new. Even for a smart person, it takes effort to read a math problem, understand it, and see the relations.

I'm reading The Road to Reality by Sir Roger Penrose. In it, even HE says he often skips equations and mathematical stuff in papers because he just can't be arsed putting the effort into dealing with it sometimes.

It's nothing special.

I'm doing a little research in bioinformatics, and imo, the best papers tend to use standard models and they don't have to generally hash out a lot of equations. on the other hand, if they are presenting a new model, it is presented without assuming too much from the reader. I think the writers of the papers know about the fear of math phenomenon and try to avoid unnecessarily complicated models

Actually, I am afraid of Math, especially because I am not allowed to follow any course except the ones from the first year until I pass the Math test, and I'm finishing the second year in these days. I've lost a semester or two, but I really want to do science.
