I'm so proud.

If anyone on /sci/ can not 2/3 you should consider not being here.

These aren't difficult questions. Fuck off back to /b/ please.

Does this really mean anything?

On all three, at first thought I got the "intuitive answer" and after giving it some actual thought, I easily concluded the real answers.

No, it is in fact a test of intelligence. If you get these wrong, you aren't merely thinking in a different style - you're just stupid.

Not really I assumed most people on here would be of the analytical thinking type. It is not too surprising that most people are but it is nice to have my preconceptions confirmed. If there had been a significant fail rate the I would have been disappointed. Analytical people are a better class of people IMO but I can put up with an occasional knee-jerk idiot.

are these questions for primary school children?

>> No.4809650

This is like 10th grade levels of math. How on earth is this difficult?
x+y = 1.1
x=y+1

2y+1=1.1
2y=.1
y=.05 or 5 cents.

Rate of production is 5 minutes/widget, so it'd be 5 minutes still.

Second is 47 days because it'd take an extra day to double the half.

I'm a high school drop out, btw.

Day 1: 1 lily pad
Day 48: 140,737,488,355,328 Lily pads

6 feet median widtth which means these pads at day 48 would cover 26,654,827,300 miles / 42,896,786,500 kilometers
They would wrap around the earth 1,070,432 times

The test is supposed to prove whether you're an analytical thinker.
OP only stated "If anyone on /sci/ can not 2/3 you should consider not being here" so you'd feel pressured into doing it because everyone on /sci/ likes to prove themselves.

Either way, I think there is some validity to this because most people who hear these question quickly go "ughh I don't want to think about that" and can never get the answer correct, but these questions are simple to an analytical thinker.

>1. A bat and ball together cost $1.10. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
Let x be the ball and y be the bat. Then x + y = 1.10 but the bat costs $1 more than the ball, so x + y = 1.10 + 1. Subtracting x+y gives 1 = 0. The problem can't be solved. Nice troll.

>2. If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?
100 machines will need 500 minutes for 500 widgets. To get 100 widgets we have to devide by 5 but then we only have 20 machines. Another unsolvable puzzle. Fuck you, OP.

>3. In a lake there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half the lake?
Let x be the patch. The next day it'll be 2x, then 4x ... The numbers are always bigger than 1/2. We can't get 1/2 x.

x + y = 1.10
x = y + 1.00

y + 1.00 + y = 1.10
2y + 1.00 = 1.10
2y = 0.10
y = 0.05

5 machines make in 5 minutes 5 widgets. This means 1 machine can make 1 widget in 5 minutes.
100 machines will make 100 widgets in 5 minutes

it takes 48 days until the entire lake is covered.
If it doubles every day half the lake is covered 1 day before the whole lake is covered
Answer: 47 days
