in many way no, but it is sort of like plate tectonics, we know what's going on but the time-scales involved mean it is quite difficult to influence in any meaningful way

who cares? It gives an amazingly elegant mechanism to explain how we are here. I am convinced that it is the single most important idea to ever come to a human. When an animal fully realizes where it has came from and what game it is in, what is controlling it, who they truly are, is when they full understand who they are and where they are going.

Well ... in sartres "The Roads to Freedom" there is a neat passage, about a pupil of the protagonist asking him for advice.
The protagonist (sartres alter ego) answers somthing along these lines :

Evolution is a fact, and has been confirmed countless times. The benefits of understanding evolution for human gain are vast and numerous.
