Why are Macs so popular in academia?

All of my professors use Macs. Only some younger non-tenured profs use PCs, and those of us grad students too poor to afford a Mac.

I like mac laptops because Apple is the only laptop manufacturer that shouldn't be absolutely ashamed of its products.

I go for Windows and a Linux distro on desktops, but nothing beats the build quality and speed of a macbook pro (well, some laptops beat its speed, but it's damn fast).

I don't understand why some people are so obsessed with their fucking OS. I mean, if you want to use a different OS, go ahead. You obviously want different things from a computer than most, but why do you care what others use?
