Okay, Mr Full Retard. Here's how it works.
How to conduct an experiment:

First of all you need a HYPOTHESIS. Then you develop a REPEATABLE TEST that yields RESULTS within FINITE TIME to VALIDATE or FALISIFY your hypothesis.

>> No.4751555

Technically guys : S.E.T.I is not an experiment.
It is a series of experiments.

Each solar system (which is becoming more like each planet lately) that they observe is observed for 8 hours at a time for signs of a radio signal that comes in a distinct pattern.

Each test is then either concluded as a positive or negative. Thus far, each system tested has been a negative. However, their overall hypothesis does indicate they would have to test millions of systems before the odds are that they'll find one positive.

They most certainly are a branch of science, and any attempt to dissuade from this fact is a clear indication of a lack of understanding for sciences vast array of fields.

I noticed someone arguing that the scientific process requires a hypothesis and, among other things, definitive results, etc.

This cannot be further from the truth. I myself work in the field of natural biology. We rarely ever employ the use of hypothesis, most of our work typically consists of strict observation and reporting.

A number of my colleagues have noticed patterns in species we did not expect. And occasionally, but rarely, a species that we did not expect to be in the region shows up, and hence, we discover that a particular species is not extinct, or that it does not exist strictly in a particular area of the world.

I find SETI's tests to be remarkably similar to our own. They set up observation of a particular region, and record their findings.

Sure, they haven't found anything yet. But I myself have numerous surveillance sets that have run for nearly a decade now, and have turned up absolutely nothing noteworthy.

... and of course there are the occasional and incredibly rare findings that are actually useful.
It's that which gives this field of science it's entire purpose.

SETI just hasn't found anything YET.

Who knows, maybe they'll find something they weren't hoping for. A natural phenomena relating to radio waves that we hadn't expected.

But attempting to claim that SETI isn't scientific because they don't employ your methodology is just plain short sighted and ultimately an uneducated opinion.
