Is there any clear disadvantage in writing on paper in horizontal position instead of vertical.

Also, /sci/'s writing and note-taking methods general.
(this might include pencil vs pen, black pen vs others, etc)

WTAF??

you should have a fucking laptop for lectures by now, fucking peasant...

I write and draw faster by hand.
Pencils are useful for brainstorming and reviewing formulas and definitions. I find erasing errors and correcting the somewhat gratifying.

any reason you cant just use a writing pad connected to the laptop?
theres still eraser functions etc. its so much better than a fucking pen/cil, this aint the 1600's anymore, faggot

I simply scan my notes weekly.

EK, you went full retard.

for many subjects a laptop is just uncomfortable. not to mention that a notebook+pen is lighter than a laptop.

if you dont need a laptop for other purposes, it's easier to carry a notebook and pen.

Uh, well I'm not exactly sure. I gave it a shot with english words written vertically (letters horizontal, words vertically stacked) and it got confusing about column size and whatnot thanks to varying word size.

I tried letters stacked vertically and words stacked vertically but spaces were hard to differentiate and it ended up looking like a wordsearch.

All of that could be due to me having learned to read and write horizontally from day one, but I used to be able to read japanese sort of okay ish and I never had that problem. Maybe the way english words are made up just doesn't work well for it, maybe I'm bad at it, who knows.

Space organization is also my main problem, however, writing horizontally, even though it's more space consuming, seems to help me when I have to develop or "explore" formulas and other concepts.

Also, lately I've been paying a lot of attention to my handwriting, to every damn letter, do you think it's worth to use more time simply to make your work more visually appealing and easy to read?

How stupid are you? Using a laptop for o.chem, maths and many other subjects is fucking slow. Retard.

>> No.4736973

>>4736953
Without a doubt. I'm not sure if you're taking research notes or just copying stuff during a lecture, but four months from now when you return to that work, you will make up all the time you spent writing it out neatly and more just because you won't have to figure out what the hell you were doing at the time.

Lab notes especially need to be organized neatly and clearly, tabulations and charts done with rulers. It may be obvious right now that 1832 refers to the specimen density and not the testing rate, but in a month or so you'll find yourself wondering which column this number is supposed to be under, and what the units were.

Doing both things actually, but somehow, maybe because I'm getting somewhat interested in zen meditation, I'm starting to go even beyond simple organization and clarity and giving my writing a sort of calligraphic quality, and watching at text written too weakly, or simply ugly, gets me annoyed.

As long as the time you spend isn't coming at the cost of your lab work, there is no reason to worry about it.

I've worked with people who consider it a mark of pride to take such care in their work, and others who do it because writing out work in such a way can help pass the time between tests.

Personally I keep my writing as clear as possible while retaining all the speed I can, as my professional position requires expedient results. Bill by the hour, you see.
