Hello /sci I am currently running a fractional distillation on some oil. The current BP is 175C I am having trouble getting the heat to climb up the vigerux column. I have added aluminum foil around the column to see if it will help. There is no steel wool at the moment. I tried to pack it last time and well it broke so I don't really want to do that again xD any suggestions would be great. I will be here for the next 20 mins

that's cool. i don't know what you're doing, but it sounds interesting.

why?

Buy or steal a water aspirator that you can connect to a convenient tap. Fractional distillations are much easier at reduced pressurE.

what's the end goal of this project? i have no shit idea what's going on

That kinda of defeats the purpose of a fractional dist.

OP its suppose to take a really long time and way too much heat, but if you're getting impatient remove some of the plates (or beads or whatever you're using).

Given that the point of a fractional distillation is to cleanly and efficiently separate two or more high boiling compounds, how is doing it at reduced pressure bad? It goes faster and you don't cook the shit out of everything so your yields are bettEr ...
