I still have my Princeton rejection letter from back in march. It is sitting in an otherwise empty drawer.

I have gone out of my apartment exactly twice since March 23rd, 2012. I believe I am near having an absolute mental breakdown. A breakdown of all that is me.

Princeton was the home for me. Princeton has always been my home. I tried my hardest throughout the awful, gut-wrenching experience that was K-12 and was near as perfect as everything as I could be. Top 5% GPA, a plethora of ECs, passion and love for my study of choice (computer science) and a special kind of love for Princeton.

So why did they reject me?

I did everything, everything I was told I needed to do to succeed. So why has this happened to me?

I wanted to study in Princeton for 10+ years. Afterwards I wanted to become a professor and spend the rest of my days in the one place that I loved.

How do you deal with the rejection, /sci/?

I don't know what to do with my life anymore

>How do you deal with the rejection, /sci/?

I don't, because I never attempt to do anything I'm not completely sure I will succeed at.

Realize that there is more out there if you take the time to look. You always should have a back up plan in life, lest you want to end up in a dead end for a while... like you did.

Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. Do something with yourself.

You can't possibly be serious. Nobody is this fucking worthless and pathetic, right?

>> No.4725242

I know it's hard to hear right now, OP, but if you feel like you're in it for the long haul in academia, you should save some money by going to a less expensive school for your foundation classes. Since it sounds like you are serious about Princeton, you will work hard and not become too attached to your other school.

Ask yourself this, is worrying about why they rejected you helping you in any way? Is it even possible to know why they rejected you? As a person with GAD I know a little bit about this. The most exhausting thing a human being can do is worry about something they don't have control over. It's futile, and just makes you worry more and get more exhausted. You have no say in their how they accept applications. So stop worrying about the why and focus on what you are able to do. Ask yourself "what can you do about this." Like are you going to reapply and/or apply for another school?

Dear students, this is a classic case of a troll. As you guys can see here, OP posted some really retarded post in order to bait other posters. A way to know this is a troll is the fact that OP did a bait and flee tactic. He has not replied after making this thread. Meaning he had no intention to answering our posts because he made it up.

Grad student here and this is the ultimate truth about post secondary school. You are not there to make friends or cutesy memories. Nobody else is. Specially at a high strung uni like Princeton. People there will rip your throat out if it meant that they could get more funds for their projects/a higher GPA/any kind of advantage, period. This is why I am eternally grateful that I entered university later than most of my peers. I knew exactly why I was going to uni, I knew what it meant to me and my future and I knew that I had to make the most out of it.

A lot of people get caught up in the "culture" of universities and they get too attached. That's when all their problems usually begin.

>> No.4725284 [DELETED]

>>4725281
Yeah, the important thing is loving what you are gonna study. I personally give rats ass to the culture of my university. Maybe its because I studying Engineering, meaning it has more use in the real world as opposed to more academia based studies.

Figure out where you fucked up, consider your courses of action and either try again or move on.

It's no Princeton, but when I finished high school here in Australia I failed to get into Medicine in the only university that has it in my state (we have an undergraduate medical degree, before someone points this out). The point is, I didn't let that failure get to me. I sat down and considered my options: I could try to get in through graduate entry by finishing another course first, I could move interstate (where I got an offer) or I could take a year off and try again. In the end, I went for the latter, and while it was hardly a valuable year overall, it forced me to get my shit together, redo the admissions test and interview, show some initiative by finding a relevant job, etc. Second time round, I got in with flying colors.

I don't know how applying to Princeton works, but surely a single letter of rejection doesn't doom you for the rest of your life. Figure out where you fucked up and learn from your failure. We all screw up in life, the point is to take something out of the experience, instead of letting it tear you down.

Just try to consider all your options rationally and if it's what you're truly passionate about, it will work out for you eventually. It just takes a bit of effort.

>>4725281
Really? I always found high school to be the most competitive place yet. In university (at least in my course), people genuinely make an effort to get along and help each other out. Hell, if you go onto the facebook group somebody made at the start of first year, you'll notice comprehensive summaries of everything we've done being posted up before exams. It's really quite nice.

OP, one of my best friends in high school was rejected from Princeton. He scored over a 1500 on the SAT (when it was on a 1600 point scale). Graduated 6th or 7th in our class of 1150 students in what was at the time one of the best school districts in the country (Plano ISD). He was active in many activities and had a plethora of recommendation letters. I have never met a smarter person than him to this day. I don't know if he was crushed when they rejected him, he didn't really talk about it. But you know what? He got into the University of Chicago, studied economics, and is now a lawyer. This dude is going to end up on the supreme court one day, mark my words. They lost the opportunity to have him be an alumni.

tldr; rejection is fucking awful. Prove that they made a horrible mistake by going somewhere else and excelling at everything you do. There is no better way to assuage your wounds and get revenge.

I really do feel sorry for Americans. Firstly, your high school is far, far behind our A level system in terms of content covered and speed it's covered at (we learn what you learn in your first year or two of uni whilst we're still in sixth form - i.e. 17 or 18 years old).

Then you have a retarded university system where you can't study what you want straight away; you don't get "pre-meds" or "pre-laws" or anything like that in British universities. And to even get into this backwards system seems to be a gamble, and not reliant on merit.

At top UK unis, it's very much a meritocracy. Only the strongest candidates get in to Oxbridge/Imperial/UCL/LSE/Warwick etc.

It's not even as if the British system is perfect - far from it - but it's THAT much better?
