you can take any nth order ODE and represent it as a system of 1st order ODEs, this can be written in matrix form as
dx/dt = Ax + Bu

the output is written as y = Cx + Du

these two equations is what's called the state space representation of a system. x is the state vector , u is the input or control, y is the output.
