What makes an ivy league college better than the others? Do they actually give you a better education or is it just ad verecundiam? Can I get the same level of education in, let us say, the internet?

>What makes an ivy league college better than the others?
Large amounts of make-believe.

The reputation of going to one of those schools greatly increases the chances of you getting a job.
Furthermore if you can get a good intelligent reputation at an IVY league school the higher ups in the business world and the higher ups in the world will notice you. The biggest draw of an ivy league school is that there is the potential to be noticed by somebody that could give you a life of dreams by taking you in and grooming you to become an elite well paid man/woman with talents revered by most people.

“Five years from now on the web for free you’ll be able to find the best lectures in the world,”
- Bill Gates, typical Harvard dropout

>> No.4701337

No. They let in only the best, that's why only the best comes out.

This is wrong -> "He's a genius because he went to Harvard".

This is how it actually goes -> "He went to Harvard because he's a genius".

Those who are going to be good are going to accomplish great things weather or not they go to an ivy league university.

As a graduating senior from Yale (commencement's tomorrow) I can safely say that the only thing that Yale (and most likely the other Ivy schools too) does better than other schools is deluding people, including its own students, into believing that Yale is better than other schools.

Fuck God, Fuck Country, and Fuck Yale.

That isn't exactly what you said at all. Because of the fact that it is an overhyped school you yourself will have that ivy league hype on your person asocciated with you for being a student that goes there. That hype alone without adding anything else into discussion increases your chances of landing jobs over people who graduated from other colleges because many hirers do see you as more qualified just because you came from there.

The potential like I said doesn't lie in the hype, though. The potential lies in excelling beyond the above average results in the student body. If you can do this and actually go out looking for people to notice, there is potential for some very big golden doors to be opened for you in your life.

You can do this at many colleges, but for ivy league schools you might get noticed by some *bigger* fish than if you went to another college.

Most Ivies are actually cheap (compared to other private universities in the U.S.) unless one's family is wealthy enough to pay sticker price. They have huge endowments.

This. Yale was actually the cheapest of the schools I had to choose from thanks to its financial aide.
