Explain the hierarchy problem of the standard model of particle physics to someone with no knowledge in QFT.

Since there are books written on coupling constants (that is, books on renormalization), this might turn out to be a difficult task.
Do you know something about Langragian field theory, block spins and fractals?

Then I say learn these first, then renormalization, then some specific QFTs and then the problem becomes clear.
It's faily technical, if you can't interpret the charge-dependencies and associated divergences in field theory.
And there are many more interesting problems before that.
