So I'm a little bit depressed about my EE degree.

I'll be graduating this year and I feel like a lot of things that I learned are pretty much shit tier compared to say 10 years ago. The majority of our projects allowed us to use Arduinos and other prepackaged components. I really didn't even need to investigate a lot of things because it's all so spoonfed for us. I'm at a top 15 university as well. Also I'll be graduating with 1 internship and a 4.0 gpa.

For example, I have really no idea how serial data is transmitted. I just know that bytes are sent and received. The specifics of this process is completely foreign to me.

Am I fucked?

Well, this is the natural development of technology. You can do things that people weren't able to do 30 years ago. It would probably take you not longer than a week to build up a guitar-effects processing unit that can be controlled via a PC.

And you have less time to learn it all, because the job asks for quick and cheap shit. No time for fundamentals, we want results!

I never understood why people went for science degrees instead of more lucrative ones.

sure you can have fun crunching numbers all day for a pretty damn good salary, but why not be the guy who hires the eggheads and makes even more money off of their hard work?

businessmen are more intelligent than scientists.

Because not everyone feels that business courses are not fucking boring and about nothing that actually is tangible.

There is one simple reason why businessmen get the big cash. Without the prospect of a nice salary, no one on this planet would even think about doing that tripe and ridiculous job.

I'm fine doing science, thank you.

i felt as you did OP

if you apply yourself it wont be a problem

if you want to know how something works, you're probably going to have to figure it out yourself

engineers are jocks, true dat.

Yea, and biologists are the best scientists because they have real life application

Seriously?

For a start, bytes aren't sent. Bits are sent.

It's all about changes in voltage.

The more you learn the more you realise you know fuck all.
It only gets worse, like drawing a street map of a town only to realise that you just mapped a highway leads to thousands of town and cities and you can never map them all.
It is OK once you realise you can only map your town to the best of your ability can and others can map the rest.

I'm calling bullshit on this one.

Obvious troll but this needs repeating
>>4677524
Because time is money, and there's nothing more important than your life. Half your life is worth more than the whole GDP of the US.

Whoever wastes half their life just to accumulate money is an utter fool. You're given only one chance at life to understand the universe around you and discover its secrets, to quench your intellectual curiosity and meet other brilliant people.

A whole life spent on accumulating beans is nasty and brutish, and in the end you'll still remain ignorant.

What school do you go to? I went to UC San Diego (structural) and no one had close to a 4.0 in our graduating class.

I felt the same as you when I graduated OP, and that was the primary reason I started a PhD: to learn how things work beyond the Arduino level.

Well bro I'm a ME and I know exactly how serial data is transmitted, so yeah you're pretty much fucked.

I started off in EE and felt the same way, OP. Then I realized I didn't really even like EE, and was only in because my parents suggested it, so I switched into math.

Amen brother. Ex mech/aero, now pure math/logic. Life is good.
