go the other way:
when you have the big one showing c², you can say:

(a+b)² = c² + 2 ab
(the whole square is the inner square plus 4 rectangular triangles with a and b with the area = 1/2 ab)

this leads to a² +2ab + b² = c² +2ab
and thus pythagoras:
c² = a²+b²
