Well on the site itself they say "Improve your resume", but no you don't get college credit or anything. You might get like a certificate of achievement or something I don't know.

Personally, I don't care about the rewards or credit, I just want the knowledge.

I signed up for the free Comp Sci course from Stanford ages ago and they said they'd email around the end of March.

On the final day of march I got an email from the course organiser saying "Sorry for the delay, it's proving more difficult to set up an online course than I had imagined. We'll give more information in the coming weeks". Some weeks passed and I got another email a few days ago asking me to sign up to Coursera online courses.

Is this the same thing? Do I need to sign up again?

The only one I've done so far is Stanford's Game Theory and it does have a timed final. You get a certificate for completing the course with at least an average of 70%.

I don't think it even teaches Java, just little bits of coding that are jumbled up that you have to put in order like a puzzle from what the course info sounds like.
Most of it is just basic things like networking, internet, and computer software rather than a course that's based around coding.

While this is a great idea, and a huge improvement over previous online verbal learning, it is still slower than just reading textbooks. Reading is faster than listening.

One bad thing about the lone studying of textbooks, is that one does not get any 'proof' that one has read it. But then again, I just want the knowledge like >>4608715

I was register in CS101 and CS373 on Udacity, CS101 is pretty good to beginning with python but the overall is pretty easy. For CS373, it was really interesting but not really challenging. I had 100% for both course without sweating.

On Coursera, I took Design and Analysis of Alg I, really good, interesting and some time challenging.
I'm following Model thinking right now, good teacher.
I began Game Theory but stopped because it was kind of shitty and I did't have time.
This week, I enrolled in Compiler, Logic, Machine Learning and Automata.
The Machine Learning course is really good and I think that people interested should take it.

I found the online course greater because it is straight forward, you don't lost time because the teacher is shitty or he didn't know where he goes.
On udacity it's even better because the video is less then 5mn long most of the time, around 1mn. You have an idea, a quiz to see if you get it with a direct feedback and at the end a homework. It's easier to focus than in a real class,

Because Stanford is not a tech school. It prepares you for a career.

One of the best examples I can give is when one of my good friends called me up for some help with his internship. He goes to MIT, yet a vast majority of MIT students in STEM fields never take a writing class in their 4 years.

He was tasked with a project by his boss, and he did the math and calculations, yet had no idea how to present his findings to his boss. Luckily for him, Stanford requires us to take 3 writing classes, and one of them tailored specifically for your major and what people in your field are looking for. I knew exactly how his boss wanted the project presented and I guided him through it. He's graduating this year and was the only MIT student to receive an offer because his reports actually made sense to his boss.

Trust me, when I heard I had to take writing classes, I was pissed. Until I realized Stanford makes them as "little englishy" as possible, and more about the practicality of communication. No analyzing dead people's poetry--just straight business.
