Kid's a huge faggot and the speech is basically him promoting himself (at least for the second half). But he's right.

I think one of the reasons a lot of people suck at math is because they don't really think about what it means and why it's important. Instead they're spoon-fed shit from a textbook and are told only to learn enough to do well on the next test.

Math is essentially about problem-solving and quantization of phenomenon (whether it's weird shapes or real life problems, etc.). People aren't shown why it's important and how you can actually logically think through most problems. If people were taught about why things are important and were taught think of things outside of just the context of textbooks, I think we would be much farther ahead in science, have a more scientifically-literate population, and have more people interested in science/math.

I don't mean that people shouldn't learn, but that people should attempt to work things out themselves. You can read a derivation and understand how each step works, but science doesn't hand us derivations to read and understand, someone has to work it out. It is definitely correct that we benefit from the work of those who come before us, because when we get stuck we can just see how they did it. But at some point progress is the result of people putting down the books and working things out for themselves... and for anyone who wants to make such a contribution they should be preparing for this moment as soon as possible.

But to actually contribute, with 'new science'(please allow this vague term for the sake of this discussion) you first have to learn everything or almost everything that anyone have done in the field you want to work on, and probablly more than that would help. The thing is, yes you can remake calculus, but it would bring 2 problems, 1 it can take really long and so you will be wasting a lot of time and second the lack of common notation will be an impediment to communicate your knowledge(And i know that from my own experience) . So yeah, prooving some of the theorems yourselve, and having a deep understanding of everything you have learned, is a neccesity to contribute to your field, but it's also the best to learn from books and others' papers, beacause science every day is less and less an individual(in the most broad meaning of the word) activity.

Huh

You know, Im a studio musician that usually just lurks /sci/ cause physics, space, and computer science are all really interesting to me. But this whole debate reminds me of a similar debate that goes on in my own profession

The concept of the educated musician vs the self taught. The educated musicians will talk about how they can read music, how they have hundreds of years of study and knowledge on their side, and all the academic arguments. They accuse the self taught players of being sloppy, ignorant, and self indulgent. The self taught guys usually talk about having soul, relevance, and other arguments similar to the autistic kid in the youtube video. They accuse educated musicians of being lifeless, bland, and self indulgent.

The truth Ive found for myself is that if your on either side of this argument, you are wrong. Here we are talking about two different abilities: the ability to take instructions and apply them to the real world (reading sheet music, or general relativity), and the ability to play with things in your mind and with your hands until you "figure it out"(improvising music, or creating an experiment)

BOTH of the ways of thinking are incredibly important. How many successful musicians do you think can improvise and cant read any music? How many scientists do you think created the most illuminating discoveries of our time without using a principle learned through text or school?

What it boils down to is that in order to be competent you need both of them, and so the autistic kids entire argument is trivial. We should be encouraging balanced, well rounded approaches. There are no absolutes (yet)

this child is being exploited by his parents and will likely encounter an unfortunate psychological denouement once the novelty of his youth wears off and his symptoms intensify

but until then, it is like watching a freak in a circus side show

There are actually plenty of "popular" people who can't read music. I can think of tons of metal musicians (just because I listen to that a lot). But there are also people like Thom Yorke, fucking Vangelis (I'm not 100% sure, but he said when he was a kid he refused to learn to read music), Kate Bush, etc.

Lots of people who can read it too. Lady gaga (not that I'm saying she is talented, but she can read music).

I think one issue is that learning to read music and learning theory can kinda kill creativity (if you just use accepted modes and don't try to think outside of the box). But I agree with my piano teacher, you have to know the rules to break them. I think overall it's definitely beneficial to know to read music and be able to think creatively.

Yeah, if you read about the history of the discovery of the atom's structure, you'll see that every generation of scientists required the knowledge of their predecessors to make their own breakthrough. Thinking without first learning is like trying solve a jigsaw puzzle wearing a blindfold.

Meanwhile, Jake is moving on to his next challenge: proving that the big-bang theory, the event some think led to the formation of the universe, is, well, wrong.

Wrong?

He explains.

"There are two different types of when stars end. When the little stars die, it's just like a small poof. They just turn into a planetary nebula. But the big ones, above 1.4 solar masses, blow up in one giant explosion, a supernova," Jake said. "What it does, is, in larger stars there is a larger mass, and it can fuse higher elements because it's more dense."

OK . . . trying to follow you.

"So you get all the elements, all the different materials, from those bigger stars. The little stars, they just make hydrogen and helium, and when they blow up, all the carbon that remains in them is just in the white dwarf; it never really comes off.

"So, um, in the big-bang theory, what they do is, there is this big explosion and there is all this temperature going off and the temperature decreases really rapidly because it's really big. The other day I calculated, they have this period where they suppose the hydrogen and helium were created, and, um, I don't care about the hydrogen and helium, but I thought, wouldn't there have to be some sort of carbon?"

He could go on and on.

And he did.

"Otherwise, the carbon would have to be coming out of the stars and hence the Earth, made mostly of carbon, we wouldn't be here. So I calculated, the time it would take to create 2 percent of the carbon in the universe, it would actually have to be several micro-seconds. Or a couple of nano-seconds, or something like that. An extremely small period of time. Like faster than a snap. That isn't gonna happen."

No one here is threatened by him. We feel mirth at the thought that someone takes seriously what this kid says.
"the amount of carbon in the universe disproves the big bang theory". To fundies this means that dogdidit

The saddest part for him is that fundies have decided to prop him up on a pedestal, to use him as a figurehead in their war against education and enlightenment.

If this kid ever realizes what his parents and that asshole professor have done to him (he loves maths and science, and this debacle has already made him the laughing-stock of any science-literate person), he will probably wish they were dead.

Really, what he deserves is pity for having such utter assholes as parents and for having had such shitty luck as having that fucking shitty excuse for a human 'professor' egg him on.

Damn right I fucking mad! I hate seeing any kind of child abuse and this kind of media circus even more.

>> No.4601690

The kid's mathematical abilities and misguided ideas have really nothing to do with what he's talking about in this talk. Even so, what he's saying is not right. Yes, the rote memorization and thoughtless process of the American education system is fucked up and not working. The solution is to "not learn," it's to learn differently. "Book learning" is not a bad thing, and to suggest that it is is just fucking retarded.
