Hello there, /sci/. Over the past few years I've developed an intense love for science and have decided to change my major to Physics. However, I fucked up my math education in high school and didn't care enough to score highly on my math placement test at university. I am still good at math, I just have no foundation is it. What level of math should I teach myself before I begin the next semester and what is the best way of doing this without actually taking a class? I am very capable of self-teaching, and I'm not worried about the actual material, I just need to know what to focus on.

Calculus. With some more calculus.

Khan Academy for high school math, then take an entrance test.

Just looked at the site. Is this free and comprehensive? This seems like exactly what I'd need.

OP here. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you so much!

No problem. I used it for chemistry since I didn't do any in high school, I was well ahead of everyone else in my tutorials after just a few hours of vids. I'm not sure if that's complimenting Khan, or insulting the academic system.

I literally can't describe how happy I am you showed this to me. I've already set a course for calculus, and I'm going to spend the summer on this. Live in the knowledge that there's a good chance you just put another person on the road to becoming a scientist.

Good luck and enjoy.

Unless you are REALLY smart, physics isn't a great career path. Unless you plan on getting a Physics PhD, you will have to start your education over after four years when you switch to engineering or chemistry.

I plan to become either an astrophysicist or some sort of chemist specializing in "space chemistry" (not sure of the exact term, probably planetary chemist or astro-chemist or something like that).

are you me OP? yeah, khan academy is pretty boss

I don't think I'm you unless you're me from the future, a clone, or an alternate personality, but yes, I agree. It's quite amazing.

I think he was trying to say that there are simply no jobs. Phd's are hard. Even if you think you are SMART enough, the work load itself is pretty overwhelming. Usually, having goals is good, but sometimes they're just not compatible with society. Be careful with your education, it's expensive and time consuming.

I've always found that if I'm interested enough in a topic, the workload itself becomes entertainment for me. While I'm sure the work itself will be intensive and difficult, I look forward to doing it.
