Hey guys, I'm confused about Hawking Radiation.
in Quantum class we were told it's a result of quantum tunneling effect, while in particle physics class they say it's due to quantum fluctuation creating particle-antiparticle pairs at the event horizon.
I'm sure you've heard of both. But as far as I can tell, they are distinct phenomenon. So which one is it actually?

Wait a second. No, I call bullshit. We don't even have any positively identified black holes, except maybe some at the center of galaxies.

The virtual pair one is the only one I've heard of. Beyond that I don't know. And while the argument over the theory and math may be settled elsewhere, we haven't actually had any black holes to observe closely so we can tell.
