I'm kind of depressed, /sci/. Can we have a Hope for the Future thread?

Basically, just share your knowledge of projects happening right now that have a chance of making the world a brighter, cleaner, more peaceful place sometime in the future.

There will be no bright future after peak oil.

Sounds like pre-industrial earth.

every board has it's own nonsense they talk about.

on /k/ it's anti-tacticool, moist nuggets and slavshit

on /pol/ it's, 'the free market will fix it', and 'it's happening!'

on /sci/ it's everyone swallowing thorium's cum. If it's so wonderful, why do we still use uranium powerplants?

>>4585458
Yes there is. Time doesn't stop just because there isn't any hope left for humanity

Every realistic proposal for replacing uranium-based reactors with thorium-based reactors has included diluting the fuel mass with large amounts of natural or depleted uranium to make it more difficult to separate out the U233, which could otherwise easily be used in atomic weapons.

This creates the exact same waste problem.

If you're not worried about nuclear proliferation, then you can just do uranium breeder reactors, which are a more mature, simpler, safer technology which has every theoretical advantage of thorium technology and the additional advantages of being able to run on and consume the waste of old uranium reactors, and when that's gone, to run on uranium rather than thorium (while there is more thorium in the Earth's crust than uranium, nearly all of it is dispersed in granite, whereas large amounts of uranium are concentrated in easily-mined ore bodies and uranium can also easily be extracted from seawater).

Look at the 40', look at the cold war, look at the world now. It's hard to believe but we're on the right track. Like now we don't even carpet bomb enemy states any more, we got to be all discrete while killing those we don't like etc, because else we must deal with peoples opinions and stuff. We just got this incredible global information network that allow us to see all the fucking shit that is happening around us and give us opportunity to coordinate and do something about it. Regarding technological developments you can only speculate, look at what people thought about the future in the past and we'll see that our guesses tend to be very weak.

that is actually not because there is lack of oil, there is plenty of it, there are fully loaded oil trucks waiting for a buyer, cause of high prices is inflation and ridiculous printing of money which lose value.

Anti-proliferation is a crock. Terrists don't have the know-how to make bombs even if they did get material. Besides, sometimes you need to blow up a few cities to make an omelette.

I am OK with thorium hype, but /sci/ should realize that uranium based advanced reactors are not any worse, and could be deployed cheaper and quicker because of similarity to current paradigm. Dont limit yourself to just thorium.
