>"study groups"

I just don't get those... They always seem to be just another get together with food and drinks and just joking around while supposedly "studying," but no one's really paying attention to their books or homework or anything, just another goofy time out with friends. It always seem to be the same type of people too, just jerks meeting at a room with textbooks, homework, and food, and not even paying attention to the first two on the list, and the few people who are doing their work are just copying off of the homework of everyone else. And these people mostly never get any better than a C or B, so I just don't get the point of these things. Studying often seems better done reclusively than with others because of this shit.

>> No.4573926

i'm largely antisocial so i never bothered with these.

i notice that it's largely the dumbasses and the suck ups that are into it too. probably just looking for people to help explain the material to them.

I can't study in groups. I can't read or work productively unless I'm alone in a quiet room.

>> No.4573932

I would enjoy study groups more if it that stuck up, home-schooled, pseudo-intellectual Twilight fangirl stopped coming to them. And her sociopathically quiet, half-breed boyfriend too.

>> No.4573935

study groups are usually for girls. basically some chicks decide to form a study group, which is exactly what you described. they sit around and eat popcorn and talk about the latest episode of glee. now, the smart clever guys start noticing this and wants to join to get a piece of the chicks, and the chicks usually welcome them in, because now they can just copy their homework off the dude. so yea, nothing academic gets done usually.

>> No.4573936

the whole point is to get together with dudes of similar interest and skill, so when you see someone goofing off you tell him to get back to work

and when you dont get something, maybe one of your bros can teach you

and when nobody gets something, you work together and try to solve it

You know, its basic teamwork.

>> No.4573942

>people that need to study in groups

back in college these people always came off like the types that would always stay below a certain status level in the work world, and never even think of trying to go for something better. i can safely tell you that i've meet a couple of these same people at a few jobs since then, and that's exactly the situation they were in.

>> No.4573943

Humans are stupid, social animals who will use any excuse they can to act in a way that comes natural.

Real study groups are rare and are less useful than googling any issues that come up while studying.

Just apes being apes.

>> No.4573944

study groups work, but no one has the balls to step-up and regulate bullshit conversations.

Eh, that kind of sounds like cheating to me (in the same sense as copying off of someone's work is cheating). I don't know, I'm more of a learn-from-your-mistakes kind of guy.

You get to get help from others and teach others that are working on things that you are working on. Unless you are taking baby math, google won't have immediate results, unlike the people in your group who are working on the material. And teaching others is a good way to gain a better understanding of the material.

get better friends for your study group, you need people around your level and knowledge

Well academic intelligence, comprehensive intelligence, and social intelligence are all three separate brain processes.

I've tried, they always turn out to be recluses like OP too that prefer to work alone.

Easy for you to say. When you are the top 0.1%, it's very difficult to find a group like that.

I study with mates 8-10h per day on average. Chat during breaks to tale mind off studying, discuss problems leads to a lot of insight. Learn a lot by teaching X when asked about it, same for them.
No pop corn though

>> No.4573990

It'd be a good way to hook up with a girl.

>> No.4573993

If you're in the group you describe OP, talk to the other people who you think want to be serious and see if they share your complaints. Then suggest that you few ditch the rest to actually work together and solve all of your problems. I've found that an ideal study group is 3 to 5 people. One of them has be a harsh taskmaster - whenever bullshit starts, he stops it. Go in with a list of problems that you need to get done and no food. If you're there for more than a few hours, agree to stop completely for food then get back to work when you're finished.

>> No.4576060

I agree, OP. Although sometimes I do better in classes when there is pressure not to fail because I'll look like an idiot (one of my biggest fears).

Can't motivate yourself to study alone -> make a group to force each other to study.

I go to them sometimes. It's actually helpful because frat boys show up with the professors tests for the past 5 years.

It's a huge advantage for me.

I also got the "engineering bible" from a frat guy at my university. It has answer keys for all the homework assignments for most professors classes.
