Hi /sci/. Long time lurker here.

I have a simple question: what is your goal in life, and why?

>> No.4548010

enjoy myself because theres nothing else to do

>> No.4548009

to not die.

>> No.4548011

>>4548009
Valid observation.

Why do you want not to die?

>> No.4548013

Dying because it is the only goal I will ever reach.

>> No.4548019

>>4548010
I'd probably go with something like that.

But when you decide you like something, why do you do that? You're here right now rather than fapping or synthesizing LSD, which I'd suspect isn't the most fun option.

>>4548013
You've already reached the goal of temporarily not dying, multiple times.

Well then, what motivates you to want money? what do you intend to do with it?

buy nice things. make investments in things i like, try starting a few busineses. complete financial independence and freedom.

>> No.4548038

>>4548033
Ahha.

In that case, what things do you like?

>> No.4548055

>>4548038
nice cars, videogames, good food, movies, women, a home gym, a new house, probably some more years in university learning about subjects i like rather than worrying about a career. maybe i could fund new scientific research or sponsor a sports team or set up my own movie studio or videogame company.

i think i'd be a lot like that kim dotcom guy.

Sounds pleasant.

Without wanting to do that annoying thing of asking three word questions over and over again, why do you like those things? There's presumably some underlying reason you want to have stuff, and I don't know what kind of justification that would have.

>> No.4548073

>>4548062
i like those things because they make me happy. simple as that. people are silly in thinking there is some deep underlying psychological reason for everything. freaud's theories have long been discredited.

>> No.4548077

>>4548073
>i like those things because they make me happy. simple as that.

Alright, why do you do things that make you happy?

Rape might make you happy, would you rape someoactually this isn't a great question for 4chan.

I guess what I intend to ask is whether happiness is your only motive or whether you have others (being ethical, etc)

>> No.4548088

to maximize personal pleasure; hedonism

>> No.4548089

>>4548077
>do i have other motives

i guess i want my parents and family to be proud of me. I want to have the power to affect society in positive ways and do things that i think are important and money is obviously very helpful for that. I could create jobs and help the economy, inspire people and contribute to culture. that would be great.

>> No.4548093

To not be mediocre in my field of study, Mathematics.

That's pretty much it. That's my main goal.

>> No.4548103

>>4548088
This I can do.

But do you think there's a logical explanation for wanting to do what you do? is the compulsion you feel for it rational, or an artifact of natural selection?

>>4548089
Thanks.

>> No.4548109

>>4548103

All I know is that I like experiencing pleasure, so I seek more of it; it's not exactly a complicated equation. It's a worthwhile way to spend the relatively short life I have.

I have long since been unsure, so I've wanted to fulfill my 3 year old self's goals, for lack of anything better.

I wanted to be a manager, a scientist, an inventor.
I'm working there, doing Masters in Engineering next year.

My 7 year old self's goal was to be an architect. My 10 year old self's goal was to have all my close family work for me. I've took on both my parents professions in the past; teaching at a college age 19, and carpentry for a few years. I'm studying my brother's subject in spare time; biology and forensic science.

But yeah, for lack of any better ideas, fulfill my childhood goals before I get dementia and die

science is a philosophy, and I genuinely pity you if you don't consider this an important issue. If you're acting without thinking out why you are acting then you have no reason to believe you are doing the right thing.

>> No.4548225

>>4548207
Yes but sitting there saying "but why do you like nice things? Why do you like having fun? Why do you want to be happy?" isn't making meaningful ethical inquiries, it's making you an obnoxious asspie dumbass.

Calm down.

I'm trying to politely ask people what their underlying philosophy is. If I wanted, yes, I could say "well it's fucking obvious you do things you want to do", but that would suck and nobody would want to post.

Life extension through science. Space colonization after that.

>> No.4549761

>>4549566

Wow, are you me?

I'm still deciding on whether I should commit my efforts towards actually doing life extension research or accumulating enough money so that I (and my family) can benefit from these technologies as soon as they become available.

The possibility of radical life extension, space exploration and all the other awesome things lying in store for us gives me the motivation to do whatever I need to. Having a long-term purpose in life has ultimately made me a far happier person. I have my own sense of heaven so to speak.

Science is a subset of philosophy.
A includes B doesn't imply B includes A.
This is like posting apples on a board about grapes because they're both fruits.
Personally I don't care about shitposting.
I do care about tripfaggotry though.

Also, try to live a really long fucking time.
