Have started doing the same with Hungerford's Algebra. Im up to about 10 pages. As you say, it's horribly time consuming and hard to keep up with during coursework, but at least it makes you a total beast in algebra.

Math is useless. If you really want to change the world, you need a degree in a truly important discipline. Anything from the liberal arts will suffice.
