Are certain university courses designed to break your spirit? Does this actually happen? I cannot tell if I am out of my depth genuinely or I am being put through some form of initiation.

It feels that way doesn't it?

Some professors are just horrible and make your life miserable by their ineptitude.

Also some classes are definitely weeder classes. The profs know this and work to keep that status.

First and second years suck for any science major.

I remember that feel from first and second year undergrad. It gets easier after there. I'm a postgrad now at much more prestigious university. Being a student gets a fuck of a lot easier every year starting from the second year.

Isn't that partly because you get better at studying?

I think so, at the later years I had the feeling it became harder.

I think it definitely got easier. In 1st and 2nd year teachers seriously try and weed the fuck out of courses that have no reason for being as hard as they're made.

OP here, these courses are my first real maths courses, all taught by the higher ups and done on a black board. No text book, no course notes, lectures aren’t recorded. If you are there 2 min late you get yelled out. It's pretty cool just I worry I am not cut out for it. Also these are the people I would get a phd under so I feel extra pressure not to be shit.

I had that feeling too ... HNNNG

Yes, because they are supposed to turn you from a science fan into an actual scientist. And the first step for that is making you lose all your enthusiasm for the subject.
