How to find absolute maxima and minima without the use of calculus?

>> No.4460309

you plot the function, assuming you are given end points.

Let's assume that you have to use algebraic computation

>> No.4460315

Graphical analysis to find points, demonstrate algebraically.

Let's assume that the function is parabolic, and that you can only use algebraic computation.

>> No.4460342

What's the function?

You mean quadratic? The problem is trivial if so, so I'm assuming you're either stupid or not making yourself clear.

>> No.4460352

isn't this the purpose of hill-climbing algorithms?

or algorithmic approaches for problems with non-closed form solutions?

>> No.4460353

Quadratic: Find both roots. Go halfway between roots. Is the function positive? Go straight up and max. Is the function negative? Go straight down and min.

Alternately look up the equation for the vertex of a parabola. This is not hard.
