If all suns are stars then are all stars suns?

>> No.4457096

>all suns

there's only one sun

>> No.4457110

If all OPs are faggots, are all faggots OPs?

The Sun is the name of the star at the center of our solar system. There are no other Suns. When people say "suns", they mean "other stars at the center of their own star system".

>> No.4457118

>>4457096

Only if you clearly refer to "the" Sun or Sol for those of you who want to be pedantic. Colloquially, it's just a synonym for star similar to the use of the word moon, as in "the moons of Mars Deimos and Phobos".

So, yes to the OP.

I like to think of a sun as the star at the center of any solar system. While they do have their own names, speaking of them in the plural is simpler when they are referred to as suns.

Only really important when it comes to science-fiction I suppose.

>> No.4457173

Depends.
"The Sun" = our star
"suns" = "stars"
"stars" = shiny things in the night (e.g. galaxies)
"stars" = stellar bodies emitting energy produced by fusion
"suns" = stellar bodies emitting energy produced by fusion

It's not that important.

Our Star's name is Sun, or Sol, our Moon's name is Luna

And the Sun's name is Sol and you're a Homo.
Iam omnes latine loquerimus, pathice!

>> No.4457190

>>4457182

And the Sun's name is Sol, your point?
The correct term for addressing Deimos and Phobos (as in that example) would be as a (natural) satellite and not a moon, since in most languages "the Moon" refers to our own planet's satellite, see: la Luna, der Mond, la Lune, 月球, Selene, etc. Same goes for "the Sun" by the way, el Sol, die Sonne, le Soleil, il Sole, Helios, etc.

>> No.4457191

>>4457189
No.. Sol is the Latin name, Sun is the English name

>> No.4457192

>>4457182
Luna is the Latin name of the moon. The moon is a satellite.

Of course, in everyday language, all stars are called suns and all natural satellites are called moons.

yeeees... aaaaaand... nooooow.. you only need to think one more step ahead and you know what he tried to tell you.

So is Luna the Moon's Latin name....the fallacy he was trying to address in that other anon's post

>> No.4457746

The Sun's designation is Sol.
The moon's designation is Luna.
The earth's designation is Terra.
These are internationally agreed designations.

stars are only a sun if they have planets around them

>> No.4457778

No they are not, English is the international language of astronomy. The IAU recognised only one English name for each the Sun, the Moon and the Earth.

Try to find a citation otherwise or even a peer reviewed astronomy paper.

And none of the "designations" are EVER used in a scientific paper. In fact, if you try to be special and uses them, everyone will shit on your paper because you're obviously a fucking hipster.

And rightfully so.
Latin is a dead language, let the dead rest.

The sun or "sol" its the name of our closest star

I'm actually a medicine student. We had some introductory latin with a worthless teacher, spent an hour a week every week for the whole damn year and hardly learned anything.

But that's okay because the tiny tiny amount of latin we've had since the is pretty damn fucking obvious.

Nowdays there's anyway this shit called ICD-10 that you use for diagnosis. Accompanied with the diagnosis number you write the diagnosis in your native fucking language. Unless you're a fossil of a doctor in which case you might use (bastardized) latin.

>> No.4457811

Actually a small correction here. You need to know two words in latin, or actually their abbreviation.
Dx. and sin. Dexter and sinister. Aka right and left.

I try not to use latin names. I will not call your calf bone "fibula" or your kneecap "patella". Anatomy teachers can go fuck themselves.
I call upon the traditional right of MD self-importance to consider my opinion superior to yours.

So what do you call the carpal and tarsal bones?
I only know one name for like half the bones in the body, will be fun to see how i readapt to my native language(my studies are in english, everything is in english, but a lot of the english is anglified latin)

Spanish: Carpo y tarso.
