Who else in here loves this subject as much as I do. Any recommendations for other good books??

I've tried to self-study free groups today from Hungerford's algebra. Wth, it was bad :(
Anyone got any set of notes describing free groups, free abelian groups and their application to prove the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups?

the serge lang book is supposed to be the classic and good intro.
I only read it for 70 pages, but I also usually don't need it.
There is a relatively short but german book called "Algebra" by ...I don't know, you're probably not german anyway.

Dummit and Foote is what I like - I wasn't too into Artin.

I hope you aren't talking about his graduate text...

OP, I just ordered that book! How do you like it?

I was going to get Artin as well but I want the 2nd edition and it is a bit expensive. Can anyone comment about the difference between 1st and 2nd edition Artin?

Slimmer and streamlined with a lot of 'improved' and 'refined' (read 'nontrivial' and 'extremely difficult') exercise.

It might be because Artin was my first Algebra book, but you should be prepared to spend a lot of time with it.

>>4455357 You know, I really like this book. I carry it around everywhere. It is not super rigorous and the author does a great job at explaining the concepts.

I really appreciate the suggestions. I will check out those books, as soon as financial aid comes in. I am broke. But this is a beautiful subject, four years of math and I have fallen in love all over again because of this subject. THANKS dudes!
