Why do you hate this man, /sci/?

>> No.4417613

Because he's jewish. Fucking evil jews.
No, but seriously, he's awesome. Why _wouldn't_ you like him?

>> No.4417618

>>4417613
I don't know, but a lot of /sci/entists seem to loathe him because he hasn't done much research and is just a talking head. I think being a science communicator is pretty laudable, myself.

He's probably the least insufferable pop-scientist out there. That being said, he is what he is, which is why we hate him. Asking us why is like asking why a lion hunts antelope.

Corny ass nigger. Have you ever heard him speak? Goddamn.

But he increases science awareness in the layman, which in turn could lead to public support of government-funded science research. That seems like a win-win, no?

>> No.4417640

love him

and i'm a racist

>> No.4417641

Real scientists do not wast their time making videos and doing conferences.

I dislike him, not because he promotes science, but because he gets all the attention that more deserving recepients will never see.

>> No.4417644

No, shush.

>> No.4417656

>>4417641
You do realize the direct effect of him promoting science is that other scientists who aren't into publicity also get more recognition as a result right?

>> No.4417664

>>4417656

B-b-but he's just pop-sci scum! Who cares if people actually LEARN something?

>> No.4417667

Not every person involved in science has to do research directly to contribute. People who do things such as raise public awareness and appreciation of science are also valuable.

>> No.4417669

>>4417664
The problem with pop science is the problem with anything 'pop'. It gives people a superficial understanding and a superficial feeling of understanding.

This will delude people into thinking they fully understand concepts. This also leads to a misrepresentation of concepts. Most importantly, it encourages one to casually explore, when the prime factor in any sort of progression is meticulous practice and exploration. So if you see it my way, it actually hinders science.

I think awareness of one's ignorance is the most beautiful of all motivators to learn.

Sadly, he mostly promotes Astronomy, not Genetics, Medical research or biochemistry in general.

You see, of all the fields, those three are the most demonized, yet they have no spokerperson. If someone would only tell the people that they are harmless and opposes no religion or whatever, we would see a revolution of thought.

But noooo. It has to be the flashy stuff.

Laymen are never going to delve deeper, they just need an appreciation so they understand the important place of science in society. Not everyone needs to be like you, or spend their life exploring the minutiae, or anything else. Appreciation is enough in society.

So you prefer the alternative ? Science being as exciting as accounting for the general public ?

Of course you won't explain stellar physics or quantum physics in a 40minutes video with lots of CGI, but you can get people interested in it, wanting to learn more. Sometimes the concepts are oversimplified, but it's never total bullshit. I'm doing a PhD now, I decided that's what I wanted to do years ago when I was young when I stumbled upon a documentary about relativity.

Neil deGrasse Tyson.

>> No.4417689

>>4417686
He has that, but he's also all over the culture. He's on The Daily Show and Colbert Report, he's had cameos in mainstream sitcoms. He's done a number of one-off documentaries. The show he hosts is Nova ScienceNOW on American public television.

He will be hosting the remake of Carl Sagan's Cosmos at some point in the future.

I really don't think I am any different than most "laymen". Appreciation is enough in society to maintain it as it is. But I am an idealist. There is a better way.

>> No.4417702

>>4417693
Not sure why you put laymen in quotes. Science communicators specifically convey complex ideas in an accessible way to to people who otherwise would not pursue them. They do this to spark interest, especially among youth.

I don't understand the faults you perceive that need to be bettered. You can elaborate on them, if you like.

Ah okay thanks.
We´ve got a pop-science show here too.... Galileo.... it was quite interesting but in the past years all they show are either "The biggest Burger of the World" or something they can blow up.
I became shit-tier but people watch it still........

...I put Laymen in quotes because you used the term, and I am not distinguishing myself from them.

The very first thing you learn in statistics is that convenience sampling is the worst and most inaccurate way to come to quantitative conclusions. It disproves absolutely nothing.

If he inspired one person to pursue a PhD, it's better than if he never lived at all. I'm willing to guess there are plenty of other people who could point to Sagan, Tyson, or other pop-scientists as initial inspirations in their youth. Not to mention just run-of-the-mill docs on the Discovery channel or something.

You are simply measuring a positive and not measuring the negative . I do not know if the final quantitative value would be positive or negative, but this was not my point.

I only said that there was a better way. I prefer an ideology where intelligence and mastery over any field is the highest virtue. In our society, it is often the contrary, where a casual and laid back attitude are viewed as ideal. I find this to be detrimental to a progressive society. To me, popsci represents another example of this casual attitude.

I don't hate him, he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

What I dislike is when someone like NDT is preferred over someone like Feynman- if you say "NDT" is the best I will disagree.

>> No.4418082

I think we got to be grateful for science communicators. You shouldn't loathe someone with a degree if he doesn't do research. If it wasn't for people like Neil, there would be less people into science, research would get less government funding and "OMG TECHNOCAUST" inevidable.
