I do not recommend doing anything extra to distinguish yourself from other undergrads at your school.

Yes

Yes, don't go into it thinking you'll be solving grand unification or anything though. You'll be doing the gruntiest of the grunt work on the project. My freshman fall was literally spent reading for my professor. I've moved up the ranks quite a bit though on the project and might get to go do a presentation in France next year!

Everyone has basically said it so far, so I'll politely sage. But yes, why in the world would it be detrimental to do it? At my uni for physics and chemistry it's actually recommended and you get 6 3000 level credit hours for doing it.
