It's really about networking. I'm an applied math grad student. I just talked to every grad student who was also working. And they all plug me with contracts at there respectively companies.

To be honest, the reason why I have had a successful time doing consulting work is because:

1. I knew the right people thanks to my MSc. supervisor sending me to conferences, networking, etc.

2. Showing people that I was very enthusiastic.

3. Being in an obscure field. This means few people can do what I can do, but it also means the demand may not be very high.

I did the MSc. because I felt it was the best step after my undergrad. Right now I wish I just skipped it in a way and was finishing up my PhD instead of just starting, but I got some solid papers out of my thesis and it helped me mature as a researcher.
