Not doing much, working only afternoons, traveling around the world, solving math problems (which is something I would do even if it wasn't my job), meeting clever people, seeing for the first time your name as the first author in the best peer reviewed journal in your domain, etc. Of course something it's a bit boring, and the pay is far from great, but it's nice.

It's really about networking. I'm an applied math grad student. I just talked to every grad student who was also working. And they all plug me with contracts at there respectively companies.

To be honest, the reason why I have had a successful time doing consulting work is because:

1. I knew the right people thanks to my MSc. supervisor sending me to conferences, networking, etc.

2. Showing people that I was very enthusiastic.

3. Being in an obscure field. This means few people can do what I can do, but it also means the demand may not be very high.

I did the MSc. because I felt it was the best step after my undergrad. Right now I wish I just skipped it in a way and was finishing up my PhD instead of just starting, but I got some solid papers out of my thesis and it helped me mature as a researcher.
