Why haven't we had as many great scientific minds in the last 30 years? Was the only reason we had so many great minds in the 20th century due to pre-Hitler Germany? I want to see more cool people like Einstein :( .

Because scientific discoveries nowadays are made by teams of scientists and you have to have a PhD to even understand the implications.

We have plenty of great scientific minds, they simple don't get the same recognition. This is because all of the scientific breakthroughs are generally performed through large collaborations and teamwork, instead of just individuals.

Because von neumann existed. He went on to discover everything that was still important, and since there was nothing important left to discover, no one could make a name for themselves after that.

People also cared more about scientific discoveries. Einstein was frequently making news paper headlines with his research.

Nowadays the last example I remember of a scientist making headlines was Stephen Hawking. But even then they made him out to look like a mad scientist foaming at the mouth about how we're all going to die and all human efforts should be redirected towards colonizing space since Earth is doomed and there's nothing we can do but colonize space.

Not exactly public masses-friendly journalism.

But he failed, and America took them in and built an atomic bomb. Then America took in the ex-Nazis and got a space program out of it.

lesson: America cannot into science without the help of refugees
