the exercises of math are special to brains;
they are, quite literally, exercise for specific mental abilities.

That is why educators always talk about 'you'll always use math skills, and everyone needs them all the time.'
It isn't the literal process of math, but the skills.

You still have to understand the concepts to use them.

That being said, I feel that there's no reason to learn math without a calculator. Forcing people to do it on paper is just torture, and is a waste of time that could be used to learn more mathematics.
