>> No.4342544

how did you do it?

>offered a place in medicine

I'm assuming you got into medical school?
What school did you get into?

U of M MS3 here.

>> No.4342546

>>4342545
university of adelaide, australia, applied from new zealand, got my marks converted, took an interview (bullshit 99.9%), and pwn'd the fuck out of UMAT (undergrad. med. entry test, 99th percentile ranking)

MS3 here again.

Grats. Good luck. Not sure how med school standards are there compared to here in the States but you are in for a ride.

Specialty ambitions?

>> No.4342551

>>4342548
told em i wanted to do general practicioner, because there's a shortage of them over there, but it depends on my marks, if i get high enough, prob specialize in something awesome, like neurosurgery (yeah right lmao). if not, then prob take some dead end thing, like cardiology.

>>4342544

high marks, good grades, and a really, really convincing poker face.

>> No.4342558

>>4342551
Heh. I wouldn't expect you to know, really. Just starting med school, nobody knows.

I mean, what sort of work do you like? Do you like problem solving? Is a shitload of money a deal breaker? Do you want long term patients? Do you want to see a lot of stuff and have to send some of it off to experts or a lot of the same stuff but be an expert in it?

Here's a good one: why do you want to be a doctor? I mean, as opposed to a nurse, physicians assistant or some other health-related profession. Why doctor?

>> No.4342561

>>4342553
congrats. you gonna need to work hard but it looks like you're set

>> No.4342563

>>4342558
no friggin idea, i bs'd my way through the interview with a well prepared answer. I'm in it for the wealth and prestiege mainly.

dont really wanna get attached to patients, in case they die. (which they will, statistically speaking)

what would you recommend?

>> No.4342569

>>4342563
Meh in my experience guys like you tend to make the worst kinds of doctors. Not trying to be a dick about it, but I might as well give you the straight up.

It's the same sort that look at medicine as a "job" rather than a "career" (which, to be fair, can feel like a job)

Why not business, CPA, real estate, etc? You make more money than most docs, work easier, and have shitload less education/work to get there.

If you are dead set on the career, then I suggest radiology. Pays well, little patient contact, pretty manageable hours, and you get to tell people you are a doctor.

>> No.4342573

>>4342546
Why, if you really did "pwn" the UMAT, did you go to University of Adelaide and not USyd or UWA which have far better med schools?

>> No.4342577

>>4342569
Not OP, but what area are you hoping to get into? Not a medfag nor a pre-med but someone who is highly interested in the medical area.

>> No.4342578

>>4342569
lol cheers for the advice, and yep, i know im gonna be the worst type of doctor, but its okay, ima be awesome.

also, the reason is purely because I'd get prestiege, and i fail at english, so i cant do law.

also im entered into bachelor of medicine/surgery, not radiology. not sure bout the states, but over here, radiology can be taken straight out of high school.

>> No.4342579

>>4342573
both those other ones had english as a prerequisite. something of which I do not have (60% in english. LOL!)

>> No.4342588

You think becoming a GP will give you money and prestige? Good luck with that.

>> No.4342587

>>4342578
I honestly doubt you will make it through med school + the however many years you do placements and stuff if you are just in it for the prestige. I suggest you go into pathology or something like that which has very little patient contact if you have no concern for the patients and are just in it for money.

>> No.4342589

>>4342587
if i wanted to take pathology or anything of the sort, then there was kinda no point in putting myself through all this to get into medicine in the first place.

>> No.4342594

>>4342588
it wouldnt, but i had to say i wanted to do it to create a good impression with the interviewers.

>> No.4342601

>>4342589
Actually to become a pathologist, you have to get a MBBS then do your residency + futher training in pathology.

>> No.4342605

Oh for the love of fuck, can you please type correctly and stop seeming like some idiotic fuck.

>> No.4342685

I am an idiotic fuck, but im an idiotic fuck that got into med, now u just jelly cos ur prob stuck in some dead end job.

Hey, sorry I took so long to get back to you.

I was busy posting in this lulz-worthy thread:

Anyway i want to become a pediatric ER doc.

>> No.4342734

Ohh how come?

And if I had gone into med I probably would have became a Trauma surgeon or ER doc.

I like the hours, I work well with kids and (almost as importantly) their parents. I have a passion for seeing kids made well when they are sick. I enjoy the challenge of the acute care setting. I like hands on work with a mix of diagnosis, treatment, and procedure. I like the variety and I'm not particularly interested in having long-term patient/doctor relationships that you see in general pediatrics. I like the fact that this sort of field would be widely applicable in an international or aid setting; one of my goals is to spend some time with MSF (doctors w/o borders). I like the occasional rush of a real emergency and excel under pressure.

sounds a lot like my statements on my post-bacc premed apps. Also sounds like something you're used to delivering to people who ask you why you do what you do. Does that question ever end? I'm already tired of having to explain my motivation.

Can somebody explain me the need for calculus/statistics knowledge to be considered for med school in US (eurofag here)?

Here only the biology and chemistry from "core sciences" are considered important and the rest like physics or math are deemed worthless (by first and sixth year med students).

>> No.4342832

If you're seemingly intelligent enough, why not go into research instead of being a pretentious mechanic?

Op, cool man. At least you said the truth, most people wouldn't admit it. You are not gonna be the worst doctor.
I hope you tell your fellow classmate, "I am into this for the prestige and also now I can tell ladies to totally undress just for simple checkups."

Same thing over here, you can toss math out the window right after passing the mcat. Same with physics, organic chemistry, and even chemistry.
