Hey /sci/. I'm trying to learn French - currently using the Michel Thomas method - but I want something to go with it. I've heard immersion is actually the most effective way to learn. However, I can't yet go to France. Would watching movies be too difficult too soon? What are some good French origin movies and TV series that would be good for a beginner to jump right into?

Also, how many years does it typically take to get proficient at a language?

Basically: What is the best way to learn a language?

Make sure you understand the mechanics of the language before you immerse yourself in it. My advice is to start the classic textbook method so you understand the syntax of the language, and then immerse yourself in it with movies/literature/etc to beef up your vocabulary and find all the weird exceptions to rules that come with natural language.

You don't. We have Google Translate for a reason.
