4277207 No.4277207 [Reply] [Original]

Hey /sci/, do you consider psychology and sociology (and other social sciences) to be science? Or are they more pseudo-science?

>> No.4277209

They are hard sciences. Only a troll or a biologist would disagree.

>> No.4277259

Of course they are, at least parts of it. It is no natural science but as long as it makes falsifiable claims and uses statistics it will be considered science.

>> No.4277261

Psychology is not science.

Sociology is.

>> No.4277280

they are of course both sciences. But less hard than meat science. Duh.

>> No.4277281

>>4277207

they are about as much of a science as astrology is

>> No.4277283

>>4277261
Parts of statistical psychology go in the direction of sociology and are considered science.

Anyway do not tell a psychology bitch you meet, that it is not science. Bitches do not like that.

Alchemy maybe.

>> No.4277290

>>4277281
you mean astronomy, right?

>> No.4277298

To my knowledge there is only one hard science.

Alchemy.

All the other sciences are like pillows.

>> No.4277300

>>4277207
So do you man that, because it doesn't involve mathemathic models, they wouldn't be science, but pseudo-science?
Science doesn't mean math, as far as I know.
and the main objective of science, I understand, is utility

Not exactly, homeopathy and traditionalChineseMedicine have utilities in our society (at least for some people) but they are not science.

Science is a system of adopting and falsifying theories using certain methods (experimental, statistical (which applies to both psy. and soc.), argumentation).

Any science is as much science as it is math.

>> No.4277382

There is social science and then there is humanities pretending to be social science. It is perfectly possible to use scientific modelling in social science, and many social scientists do use it, but unfortunately people like to believe they're special and so we get postmodern faggotry about why society can't be treated like every other phenomenon.

Retrodictive modelling is an example of how the scientific method can be used in studying history. The idea is to formulate a theory, then test it against the results that history has already provided us. Peter Turchin has obtained some interesting results using this (he calls it cliodynamics). It's also been picked up by military strategists, just recently I was invited to a conference hosted by the MoD (British Ministry of Defence) on the topic of how strategy can benefit from retrodictive models. Retrodictive models in political science can be (and in fact have been, successfully) applied to predict forwards in time as well, like a normal scientific experiment.

This tends to be overlooked by many academics who are innumerate and who pontificate about methodology instead of settling down to actual research, but there are also plenty who are interested in genuine scientific research.

science appeals to objectivity to determine facts. Psychology is people (not rational objective

thinkers), appealing to subjective accounts of reality to verify (often at times) biases on behalf

people who feel intellectually superior to others for believing that there is motive behind peoples

actions other than their own random freewill and experiences culminating into an observable action.
Psychologists prove what they want to prove because when dealing with people (who are not objective

but subjective) to determine truth instead of an objective reality you cannot define what you are

doing as science. its got the scientific method in there but defies the very definition and

philosophy behind science. Its not science its bullshit. gathering information through surveys is not

science just because you call it science and it includes the appropriate methodology/ when dealing

with the human brain, mind, and human condition and then trying to comprehend behavioral anomalies

maybe you shouldnt search with "science" .

>> No.4277539

the motivation behind psychologists studies are ridiculous

and are not the study of actual phenomena but personal percieved variances in behaviour not relevant

to the universe or even all of humanity but only those interested in making sure that their child

focuses in a boring classroom. They diagnose any behaviour that isnt desirable as an illness. and

then prescribe any assortment of medication that hasnt been proven to help in any fucking way with

getting rid of the so called disease, but instead treat the imaginary symptom. Fuck you so hard if

you think its ok to dope up children for being children. fuck you so hard if you cannot see how the

whole process carried out by psychologists is nonsense. A real scientific question would inquire

about the state of the world all around us and asks the WORLD/REALITY how. Psychology asks PEOPLE why

the people around them are so fucking annoying. A psychologist is a magician conducting a survey

asking a dozen ignorant uneducated people if magic is real. Just all the way around its loaded

bullshit ready to blow. and then they actually publish the results and say "HEY THIS IS REAL, BELIEVE

THIS"
You cants science magic.
