Putnam/IMO problem of the day from

http://www.math.harvard.edu/putnam

By reading it, you must attempt to solve it.

The /sci/ mod *has* been proven to have zero originality, as shown by him using nearly the exact same ban message ("inane trolling garbage" or a close variant) each of the the 8 zillion times a day he decides someone needs to be banned.

I agree. The /sci/ mod is a real cumguzzler.

Is there an archive of these problems? I wanna take a look at the old problems of a day but I cant find 'em on the site.

Hahaha, why on earth should he waste more energy on you than he already is, we should be happy that he bothers with you scum. What kind geek trash expects a personalized ban message? I'm pretty sure you don't contribute anything positive so please leave and never come back!

This has nothing to do with the mod, I don't really know what he does if anything but anyone who annoys you must be doing something right.

It's algebraicly reducible to (a^x)(b^(1-x)) = (a - be^u)sinh(ux)/cosh(u)

Any ideas for the next step?

>> No.4257203

>>4257178
you mean you're not just too lazy?
The reasonning is pretty clear here:
you study the function of x defined by one of the sides minus the other, you find the extremal values that meet the conditions as a function of a and b, you can then obtain your c.

If that counts, I come from the school at which all of the ten French laureates of the Fields medal studied (hence the school that taught most Fields medal laureates, I think). I did computer science and not maths though, and the school ranks weirdly in international rankings due to its small size per subject and vast number of subjects, as well as the fact that research is never done in the school itself but in universities that collaborate with the school itself, and also that it is the best school to go to if you want to be a high school teacher in a good high school, and people who do that don't publish papers or anything, which doesn't account well for the fact that they are usually still great in their subject.

Cachan (Ker-Lann actually). Won't tell from which year because considering that comp science in Ker-Lann has from 5 to 10 students per year, it would get too close to me for 4chan.

J'espère sérieusement que vous ne faites pas ça, les gars. Il n'y a rien de plus ennuyeux que d'enseigner comment tracer une fonction linéaire.

Because the French education system is fucked up and like no other. In France, when people have good marks in math/physics, they get into special schools with special teachers for an intensive 2-year-long learning program in math, physics, chemistry, engineering and/or computer science. The courses are typically those of an average undergrad in the US; they can tackle Putnams/IMOs without thinking "what the fuck am I reading". At the end they have hard exams whose results will determine what schools (called "grand ecoles" or "engineering schools") they get to study in. People willing to cope with such heavy doses of math and physics are typically nerds, and thus are more likely to browse 4chan. Here's your answer.

>People willing to cope with such heavy doses of math and physics are typically nerds

Oh come on, I know you also found the most normal people on earth in prepa too :D

Here's every putnam problem ever, with the answers:

Yeah I didn't really advise anyone to do that. I did ENS in comp science, there's no agregation in comp science and (currently) no comp science teachers in high schools, so obviously I'm here for research (could be for university teaching or for going to the industry though). And yeah, I agree that French prepa is probably higher level than the average foreign "good" university for those 2 years. Unfortunately I think that unless you join a really really good school after prepa, this isn't true anymore afterward...
