I have made a major discovery! One that will revolutionize mathematics forever, and one where I will share the prize with all of you wonderful folks! Gentlemen, I have proven how to square root a negative number.

Behold!

I think this thread just lowered my IQ.

First off, the commutative property doesn't apply to square roots. In order to take a number out from under there, you have to perform take it's square root.

Assuming you had done it right, you would have ended up with i multiplied by the square root of 4, which is 2i.

square root of -4 is square root of -1 * 2 or 2i like somebody else said

also first to sage. the rest of you are faggots

inb4 OP learned this in his highschool math class today.

My problem is that people hear the term "imaginary" and think it's just some useless mathematical artifact that has no relationship to the "real" world (pardon the expression). Why don't we call them something else, like complex?

u jokin rite?

imaginary numbers are a part of complex numbers.

x = √(-4) is a solution to x² + 4 = 0
x = -2 is not
