sup sci. in less than two weeks i have to take my phd generals. i don't think there's any reasonable expectation that i'll pass, unless i get stupid-lucky and my examiners ask me about a tiny subset of stuff i'm boss at.

stress. so much stress.

what exactly happens if you fail? also, what is the exam like? is it written or what

>> No.4204891

>>4204875
well you do get two chances, should you fail. if you fail both, you are kicked out of the phd program.

the exam is purely oral, behind closed doors. very binary. i pass or i do not.

looks like you aren't going to be a "rocket science phd student" much longer.

now your threads will have to be "ask a failed rocket science phd student anything"

Hey op, I just took my phd general exams a few weeks ago (materials science).

Mine were also purely oral examinations. I was was pretty anxious going in, but it ended up going smoothly. The best advice I can give is to study what you feel you're weak in, since you have a limited amount of time. Get a good night's sleep before hand, and try keep yourself calm even if you get asked a problem you have no idea how to start. Just talk yourself through it.

Good luck.

>> No.4205115

Good luck OP, you're not fucked dude, orals are much easier than written candidacy exams -- I know because I've undergone both -- just skim over everything you have (books, papers, notes) as a refresher, and it helps (yes) to talk to yourself.

good luck big mate
