I'm starting college this Spring. Is it true that colleges have a left-wing bias? Not that it bothers me, I'm just curious.

out of the 14 profs I've had, 3 have been self declared communists.

Yes.

A staple of an intellectual is a sense of superiority. Colleges Foster this sentiment greatly.
For whatever reason, these kinds of people gravitate towards the left wing? Perhpas they feel some obligation to help their fellow man which they percieve as not able to solve their own problems, and thus put forward poorly formulated reform in an effort to help? See socialism and communism. It sounds all great and capable for the intelligent elite to implement, but they cannot comprehend or ignore the real-life consequences of such systems.

Usually people who have made it to university, go in with a basic understanding, and come out with a better understanding of the world around them. While in uni, they learn more about things like science and history. They also meet people who are not from the same small town, state, or even country that they grew up in.
Many people who do not go to college or university have little experience with new people or ideas, and remain a little narrow-minded throughout life.

The worst left-wing bias will probably be in the humanities departments.

Slightly, but it depends on the college. You're not likely to find hardcore leftism from the hard sciences, math, or technology/engineering. More likely to find that from history, art, or any class that has the feel "how do you grade the work we do?". If possible, check your profs ahead of time, most colleges give you a week or two to change classes at the beginning of each quarter.

This is another problem that both extremes of the spectrum suffer from, but leftists get more violent about; someone who does not agree with them, or posts their faults.

Becomre more centrist, guy

Dear God yes. Some of the people you will encounter are simply insufferable. You will never see so many people so hopelessly disconnected from reality as you will in college.
