You can't be serious? The world has a huge population; people will die from everything possible. The reason it's news is precisely because it is so rare to die from a single punch. Deaths are much more common in fights involving weapons. You are much safer just trying to keep the guy off of you until the fight is broken up, especially when it takes place in a crowded place which I am assuming it did as it sounds like it took place in OP's class.
